(née Donaldson)

August 12, 1950 - March 1, 2019

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Cheryl Brown, after a brief illness, on March 1, 2019 at the age of 68 years.

Leaving to mourn her passing are her son Reid; daughter Rebecca (Chris); and the center of her universe, her granddaughter, her “poonut”, Emerson-Rose.

Cheryl is predeceased by her parents Mary and Ross, and her brothers Billy and Scott.

Mom was born in Montreal in 1950, and lived in many places in Canada including Goose Bay, Trenton, Toronto, and Winnipeg as her father was in the Armed Forces. After graduating from St James Collegiate in 1968, she made Winnipeg her home. Married in 1974, she was a dedicated mom to her children, Becky and Reid. She spent many nights driving to dance competitions, sewing sequins, washing Taekwondo equipment, and making sure her children wanted for nothing.

While Mom worked at several jobs throughout the years, she found her “home” at Deer Lodge Centre, beginning in 1991. She worked as a ward clerk, and administrative assistant, and spent her final and best years working in the OSI clinic, where she touched the lives of so many clients and coworkers everyday. When asked when she was going to retire over the past 10 years, she always said “Maybe Next year…”, and yet she worked until less than a month before she passed. She was a mom and a friend to many. The family has been touched by the outpouring of support and love from the people in her life, and Mom was humbled during her hospital stay by the love that was shown to her and her family.

Besides her family, Mom had many other passions in her life. Curling, suspense movies, reading, and crosswords were her favourite past times. The stereo in her living room was always set to the country station. When asked what her favourite was, she said “All of them!”. Although not an avid traveller, Mom travelled to the Maritimes, Chicago, Nashville, Las Vegas, and even Korea to visit Reid on one of his many overseas stays. An avid animal lover, she donated regularly to the Humane Society, D’Arcy’s ARC, and Craig Street Cats.

Her highlight of each week was her Friday nights with Emerson-Rose and her monthly sleepovers doing crafts and watching movies on Netflix. Emerson loved to read books with Grandma, and was in awe of all her pretty earrings. Becky will miss going to craft sales and the Sunday night dinners where Chris cooked entirely too much food.

The family would like to thank Dr Hamedani and the staff on the 3rd floor of the Grace Hospital for Mom’s care in her final days and their support of her family in this difficult time, especially the night staff who were so accommodating to Becky and Reid as they slept at mom’s bedside during the final three days.

Friends and relatives are encouraged to share in a eulogy, stories, and condolences for the family by commenting in the section on the right-hand side.

As per Moms wishes, no funeral service will be held. The family will hold a gathering in her honour at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Mom’s favourite charity, Craig Street Cats.

Rest well Mom, you will be missed more than you will ever know.
