Ruth Brown | Obituary | Ethical Death Care | Winnipeg

(née LEASK)

Ruth Brown (Leask) of Winnipeg, Manitoba passed on December 29th in the company of family.

She was the last remaining of 17 children born to Harold and Mattie Leask of Flin Flon, Manitoba. Ruth was fiercely proud of being from Flin Flon and regularly attended the monthly Flin Flon reunion meetings in Winnipeg. Ruth is survived by her son Tom and his wife Nura along with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was fascinated by US politics and watched hours upon hours of news channel coverage. One of Ruth’s strongest traits was her tenacity. She did not have a lot of hobbies, but what she did, she committed 200%. In the mid eighties, she raised over $80,000 for the Tom Baker Cancer Center in Calgary by selling teddy bears dressed up as Canada Post letter carriers. When her sister, Gail, introduced her to the NBA, she quickly developed a passion for the Toronto Raptors. She enjoyed watching all kinds of sports, which was a welcome break from the news channels.

That passion also manifested itself in Ruth’s letter writing campaigns. It did not matter if it was civic, provincial, or federal issues – if she had a concern – someone’s getting a letter or two or three.

We are extremely grateful for her “adopted family” in Winnipeg, Dean, Cheri, Derek and Katie Wilson. They, along with other dear friends, have cared for her over the past several years. There are no words for how much you meant to Ruth and continue to mean to us. May you be richly blessed for your kindness.

The family would also like to thank the amazing nurses, assistants and support staff from Concordia Hospital that took care of her in her final days.

In honor of Ruth’s wishes, there will be no memorial service.
