MICHAEL WALLACE CAMPBELL BRYANS
August 9, 1945 – October 11, 2019
Our beloved brother and uncle, Michael. died at home on October 11, 2019, at the age of 74.
He will be greatly missed by his brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Penny; nephews Matthew Metcalfe and his partner, Patti Ulrich; Mark Metcalfe; and John Bryans; niece, Margaret Bryans; Jess Koroscil; and his dearly loved great-niece, Georgia. Many cousins and extended family, the ‘Sunday family dinner’ family, and friends and neighbours will remember Michael fondly.
Michael’s life was one of service, duty, and caring. He enjoyed his work running the mail service at the Woodsworth Building. He worked hard to provide the best service he could to the many departments that were under his care. During much of his working life he was also caregiver to his sister, Pat Metcalfe, then to his mother, Aurora Victoria Bryans. His selfless devotion supported his goal to give his mum the best quality of life he could right up to her death at 93.
His dad, Reginald James Bryans, was able to take the family to Victoria Beach as the polio epidemic of the mid twentieth century was spreading. It was then that Michael’s life long love of Victoria Beach was born. He spent many summers and spring weekends enjoying everything about the beach including the bakery’s dream cookies and eccles cakes. Maybe not the fall raking.
Michael always had a dog in his life from Jeff, who slid down the slide with all the kids at Victoria Beach, to Lady, who loved and teased him as only a young dog can. As Michael’s health deteriorated he worried so much about Lady and her future, and he sorely regretted his inability to continue walking her.
Michael’s neighbours were an essential part of his life. He was very aware that living alone meant he needed to seek out connections to others. He did things his way, and in the end he knew a lot of people-and dogs. The family is very grateful to those neighbours; many of them have offered to bake, haul junk, whatever we needed. Mostly we are grateful for their care of Michael.
Memorial donations may be made to Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter, 3062 Portage Avenue, Wpg., MB, R3K 0Y1.
