August 20, 1933 - September 19, 2022

With heavy hearts, we announce that Olive passed away on September 19, 2022 in Winnipeg, Manitoba at the age of 89 years.

She is survived by her children Clarice, Ron (Maureen), Gordon (Marie), Dawn, and her daughter-in-law Kathy (Harold). Also by her grandchildren, Sonny, Dustin, and Erica (Clarice), Christopher and Johnathon (Ron), Matt and Danielle (Gordon), Devon and Max (Dawn) and, Tyler and Andrew (Kathy). She is also survived by thirteen great grandchildren which includes: Elliot (Sonny), Jude, Gabriel, Dylan and Nya (Dustin), Aiden and Charlotte (Erica), Brin and Kai (Christopher), Rowan (Danielle), Rowan (Tyler) and Lauren and Easton (Andrew) as well as by   many nieces and nephews.

Olive was born on a farm not far from Riding Mountain National Park. She was the youngest and last survivor of the fourteen children born to Pete and Mary Skatch. As a child she liked sports and was proficient at many track and field events. She met husband Peter when he got lost doing the Census and ended up on the farm she grew up on. They married shortly after and moved to Portage la Prairie. She dived headfirst into being a mother and housewife. She had five children in five and half years but was very good at baking and cooking traditional Ukrainian dishes so the cupboards were always full and the house smelled wonderful especially when the cinnamon buns were in the oven. Dinner guests were frequent at the house and neighbours and friends were always welcome to join the family for a meal.

Olive also was a fighter and battled stomach cancer successfully and going on to live many many years longer than the doctors thought she would.

Olive worked at several jobs in Portage, she was a cook and waitress at four Portage la Prairie snack bars that were located in the curling club, at Safeway, at the golf course and at the Portage Collegiate, Her last job was at the Manitoba Developmental Centre working as a dietary aide.

Peter and Olive enjoyed travelling and each year they ventured off somewhere. They started out camping as they crossed the country. They at first went with a tent, then a collapsible trailer, then an actual trailer, and finally a motorhome. That motorhome then became their actual home once they retired and moved to Vancouver where they lived until 2006 when Peter died. Olive returned to Manitoba and lived in Winnipeg, taking part in the many events around her grandchildren and great grandchildren. GiGi as she came to be known will be missed by them.

A celebration of Olive’s life will be held 1:00 p.m. Sunday, October 16, 2022 at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Portage la Prairie where she will join Peter when her ashes are interred in the memory wall beside his.

Olive's family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.
