August 17, 1939 - March 7, 2023
Pat was a cherished mom, daughter, grandma, sister, wife, auntie, and friend to those who loved and knew her.
She is survived by her sons, Philip (Ann Marie), Jeffrey, and Stewart (Susan); grandkids, Chris, Gillian, and Austin; and great grandkids, Linnea and Owen. She also leaves behind many special nieces, nephews, and friends. Pat was predeceased by her sister Florence, with whom she was especially close, and her daughter-in-law Laura. Pat married Stanley Hayek in 1957. Though they divorced, she remained friends with him until his passing.
Pat worked at several places over the years, the most notable being the Winnipeg General Hospital (HSC), Manitoba Government Telephone Services, and the Red River Community College as a librarian (her dream job). She was fortunate to enjoy a long retirement.
She was a voracious reader and enjoyed mysteries, biographies, and almost anything else that would catch her eye. Fascinated by genealogy, she spent years compiling a detailed record of all branches of her family, taking great pride in her Metis heritage. Pat had a passion for music and would walk around the house singing in her younger years. The classical songs from musicals and, to the puzzlement of her sons, Barbra Streisand, were her favourites. She had a lifelong love of water and sand, with her best childhood memories being of summers spent at Winnipeg Beach.
Mom was famous for her baking skills, especially her Cowboy Cookies. She wrote this beside the recipe, “When my sons were young, I made these just about every week (doubling the recipe). Besides my sons, they fed half the neighbourhood kids.” Pat continued the tradition by generously gifting her goodies throughout her entire life.
Patricia’s sons would like to acknowledge the kind and extraordinary care of Jeanne Garbe who was a good and close friend to mom for many decades. Sheila Blazenko and Bill Topping for helping her out when age began to slow her down. And her grandniece, Ashley Coates, who held a special place in Pat’s heart.
Pat’s family kindly requests that her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos and/or sharing your own memories and stories using the comment section on this page.
