JOHN PETER JANSEN
March 22, 1935 - July 26, 2023
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our much-loved husband, father, and opa, John Peter Jansen at St. Boniface Hospital on July 26, 2023.
Dad will be remembered and deeply missed by his wife and soulmate of 65 years, Antonia (Toos); his children, John (Janice), Diane, Rick (Laura), Darlene (Randy), and Bob (Alyson); grandchildren, Ian, Tom, Hannah, Attyah (Jason), and Emma; and great grandson Walker. He will also be remembered by his brothers, Bill and Frank (Wendy); sisters, Elizabeth (Andre) and Corrie; sisters-in-law, Mieke and Ann; and brother-in-law Kees. Dad was predeceased by his parents, Johannes and Johanna; his brother Peter; and several in laws.
Dad was born on March 22, 1935 in The Hague the Netherlands. Dad’s Dutch heritage was a source of pride to him and you could often hear him say “if you ain’t Dutch you ain’t much”. Dad’s family immigrated to Canada in 1955 and his first job in Canada was at the Esso station on Renfrew and Academy. Shortly there after he moved to Manitoba Hydro where he eventually retired as the Manager of Fleet Services.
Dad met the love of his life Toos, shortly after arriving in Canada and they were married on July 12, 1958. The couple welcomed five children into their family. Family was extremely important to dad and he was always happiest when surrounded by his children and grandchildren. Dad was extremely proud of his family and anyone who encountered dad would always hear about his family’s accomplishments. Dad’s love for family also extended to his many nieces and nephews who will remember him for his jokes, stories and laughter.
Dad loved the outdoors and his favorite place was the family cottage at West Hawk Lake. His grandchildren grew up at the lake and many memories were made at the cottage which his family will cherish forever. Dad was an avid curler for many years and enjoyed watching curling and football on tv. A mechanic by trade he could fix anything which fortunately allowed his children to save thousands of dollars in car repair bills over the years. Dad loved to travel and made many trips with mom back to Holland. In the early years the family enjoyed the annual trip to Grand Forks and in the later years dad enjoyed several trips with his children to Hawaii, Mexico, Palm Springs and the Caribbean.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff of St. Boniface Hospital 4B, as well as to the WRHA Self and Family Managed Care program and Home Instead who allowed us to keep dad at home. The family will be forever grateful to our healthcare workers Woinnie, Baljeet, Rajdeep, Finan, Iryna, Aminat, Adrienne and Falley for the kindness and respect you showed dad over the years.
Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Tuesday August 8, 2023 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Memorial Church, 249 Arnold Ave.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Alzheimer’s Society of Manitoba.
