MARY KATHLEEN JOHNSTON

(née HOOPER)

January 28, 1969 - February 10, 2023

It is with deep emotion that we announce the passing of our mother, Mary Kathleen Johnston, on February 10, 2023, at the age of 54.

Surviving Kathy are her children, James, Christopher (Lyryk), Scott (Donna), Roseanna and Paige (Joel); as well as her grandchildren, Nevaeh, Thane, and Renee. Also mourning her passing are her sisters, Frances Ross and Joyce Hooper; father of her children, James Johnston Sr; as well as many other relatives and friends, both near and far. Kathy was predeceased by her son Gregg Johnston; parents Mary and James Hooper; brother James (Jim) Hooper; and brother-in-law Glen Ross.

Kathy was born on January 28, 1969, at the old Concordia Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Kathy was the only Canadian-born child of Mary and James Hooper; the rest of her family having emigrated from Glasgow, Scotland. Although she was a true Canadian, she enjoyed her Scottish heritage.

Kathy attended Neil Campbell School, Munroe Junior High School, Miles Macdonell Collegiate, as well as Winnipeg Adult Education Centre. She was extremely proud of her lifetime accomplishments, including completing her grade 12 and her position working for Manitoba Justice. Above all else, she cherished her children, grandchildren, and her dogs.

Kathy had a very happy childhood, filled with love and affection from her parents and older siblings. She was a very strong willed and outspoken person. She always wanted the best for her children, to make sure that they could have the same kind of childhood that she had.

In 2012, Kathy suffered a terrible stroke. Thanks to her perseverance, and the efforts of the staff at the Health Science and Riverview Health Centres, she pulled though and regained her independence. In the years that followed, her health continued to decline, causing her to spend time in and out of the hospital. Her family is grateful for the patience, care, and compassion of all the healthcare workers that helped her during her final years.

Kathy’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page. A celebration of her life was held at 1:00 PM Saturday, March 18, 2023 at 603 Wellington Crescent, (Unitarian Facility).

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Manitoba Heart & Stroke Foundation, or an animal rescue of your choice.
