Joyce Laliberte

September 3, 1938 - February 11, 2023

On Saturday, February 11, 2023, at age 84, Joyce Helen Laliberte got her wings and went to walk with the angels.

Joyce was born on September 3, 1938, to Jean and William Cooney in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She was raised on Beverley Street, in Winnipeg’s west end. Her father, William Cooney, died in World War II when Joyce was 6. Joyce graduated from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute at 17 and pursued a career with Great West Life Assurance Company. She met George (Kelly) Laliberte in her early 20’s and was married shortly after. At 30, Joyce decided to retire from GWL and dedicate her life to being a strong and caring mother. Joyce went on to run an insurance business with her husband together for many years out of their home.

Joyce was a beautiful lady both inside and out. She was a caring and selfless person; always putting everyone else's needs before her own. Joyce was the matriarch of her family and had the respect and affection of everyone she knew. She spent countless hours running her daughters to various sporting events, including years of competitive swimming practices and meets. She loved her grandchildren with all her heart and was their number one fan at all their sporting events, especially hockey games.

Joyce was an avid sports fan and spent many hours watching the Winnipeg Jets, Blue Bombers and curling events. She was a very talented knitter. Her knitted items were beautiful and always in high demand. Smart as a whip, Joyce enjoyed doing crosswords, puzzles and all manner of online mind games. She loved music and was an accomplished accordion player, actually cutting a record in her youth. She also loved dancing and spent many hours jiving the night away with her husband.

Joyce was predeceased by her parents, Jean and William, and her daughter Christine. She is survived by her husband George (Kelly), her daughter Nicole, her grandchildren Steven (Rennae), Shayne (Dylan), Darien (Alexia), Devon (Sydney) and Kelly (Taylor) and great grandchildren Charlie, Cooper and James.

Ovarian cancer took both Joyce and her daughter Christine. The family requests that donations be made to Ovarian Cancer Canada in lieu of flowers.

Joyce's family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.
