MARGARET ELIZABETH MAXWELL

(nee Stewart)

April 17, 1923 - May 11, 2017

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of our dear wife and mother “Maggie” on May 11th, 2017.

Maggie is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, Gordon Maxwell, and her four daughters: Lynne (Errol) Sokoloski,  Lee (Peter) Mohr,  Lesley (Dave) Leonhardt and Lorril Vielfaure (Andre). Also mourning her loss are her grandchildren:   Kelly (Jon) Courtney, Ashleigh (Sheldon) Wiebe,  Jenna (Blair) Irwin,  Jessica Mohr (Todd), Jackie Mohr, Joel Leonhardt, Scott, Marc, and Nicole Vielfaure, as well as 7 great-grandchildren.

Mom was predeceased by her daughter Lizabeth and her sister Irene Craig.

Mom was born in Winnipeg on April 17, 1923 and grew up on Oakview Ave. in East Kildonan.   Growing up, she was a member of the Winnipeg Canoe Club and was active in sports, excelling in tennis.  Back then, summers were spent at Grand Beach with family and friends.

She met Dad and together they built their home on Kimberly Ave. where they raised five daughters.   Mom and Dad enjoyed summers at their cabin at Falcon Lake where great memories of happy times with family and friends were made.  Once Dad retired, they spent their winters in Florida.

For many years, Mom worked at the Christmas Cheer Board where she developed close relationships with her co-workers serving the Winnipeg community.

Mom spent many of her earlier years singing with the Winnipeg Sweet Adelines.  She would sing anytime and anywhere, even in a doctor’s office if someone slightly edged her on.   It was amazing that at 94 she could still remember all the words and sing on key.   At family occasions we would enjoy spontaneous outbursts of her favourite songs.  She loved an audience and was the “spark” in the family with her quick wit and outgoing personality.

Mom loved her family and was proud of each of them.  Through the years, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the “light of her life”.

Cremation has taken place and a private family memorial service will be held at a later date.
