FRANCISCA MCINTYRE

August 27, 1943 - January 28, 2018

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Francis McIntyre, on January 28, 2018 after a courageous battle with cancer.

 

Francis was born August 27, 1943 in the town of Lobith, in Herwen and Aerdt, Netherlands and immigrated to Manitoba as a young girl.  She was known as Ciska or Cis, to her large family; parents Arnolda and Theodorus; brothers Willy, Pete, and Theo; and sisters Greda, Marie, Leida, Siebella, Thea and Annie.

 

Mom attended General Wolfe School and Gordon Bell High School, where she met our dad, Neil. They were married in 1962.

 

She is survived by five children and their families; Michael (Tracy) and their children Donavan, Patrick and Leah; Tim (Angeline) and their daughter Jennifer and grandson Kale; Kevin and his son, Tyler; Tara (Mike) and their children Connor and Brianna; Krista (Doug) and their son Jamie; and numerous relatives and friends. Her husband Neil predeceased her in October 2000.

 

Mom’s longest employment was at The Bay Distribution Centre, where she initially started part-time to help support the family. As her kids grew older, she was promoted to full-time and became a supervisor until it’s Winnipeg closing. However, mom’s most memorable and important job was raising her 5 children. Mom was an excellent baker, known for her banana cream and apple pies, chocolate cake (with homemade Jeannie’s icing), butter tarts, cheesecake, cinnamon buns and plum strudel. The last piece of any dessert caused many family fights.  Mom’s the only person we know who could cut a pie into 10 pieces so that each kid could get two pieces. She was also a great cook, with many signature soups and dishes that are ALMOST replicated by her kids. Mom’s hands were always busy. She loved sewing, knitting (from sweaters to scarves to clothes hangers), crocheting and needlepoint, gardening and tending her plants and flowers, and reading (mom sometimes had more than 5 books on the go at any given time.)

 

Mom enjoyed camping and watching her kids play hockey and ringette when they were young. She volunteered with the community club, chaperoning teen dances and working the canteen. She later loved travelling with her family and friends to such places as Holland, Disneyland, Hawaii, Mexico and across Canada and the US.  Mom loved playing Bingo and cards at family get-togethers, especially the game 31, where she’d whip out an always-handy bag of quarters. She loved weekend trips to Shooting Star. She liked walking through the Zoo and English Garden at Assiniboine Park and enjoyed Sunday dinners at her various children’s homes. She loved being around her grandchildren.

 

At mom’s request, cremation has taken place and a small, private reception will take place.

 

The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff at CancerCare Manitoba; Riverview Health Centre, 3 East, and the palliative homecare nurses for the care and compassion mom received under their care.

 

In lieu of flowers, should friends desire; donations in Francis’s memory may be made to CancerCare Manitoba.
