EARL HELMET JOSEPH GIERSCH

April 13, 1961 – October 12, 2020

It is with profound sadness and great heartbreak we inform you of the sudden passing of Earl Helmut Joseph Giersch.

He leaves to mourn his wife of 37 years Sharon; sons Shane (Margaret), Karl (Sarah), and Bryce; his granddaughter Heidi; father Helmut; mother Rita; brothers Ken and Gary; several nieces, nephews; a great-niece; a great nephew; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; aunts; uncles; cousins; his union brothers of CPR, especially Dave (the Ying to his Yang); David his special brother-in-law; and too many friends to mention.

Earl worked as a steel fabricator at the CNR for 5 years before moving on to become a main line Conductor for the Canadian Pacific Railway where he put in 33 years until retirement. He was a charmer by nature, mischievous and funny. But his love was deep, and he was very protective of the ones he loved. Earl loved the simple things in life; no fanfare needed. He lived his life fast and hard with numerous achievements. Dedicated to fitness, with a love of hunting, fishing, hockey and swimming, he was a master at all. Besides enjoying golfing, camping was a favourite pastime he loved sharing with his boys. Earl loved to cook and even created his own signature “cowabunga” BBQ sauce (named by his sons) that will continue to be a family favourite.

i carry your heart with me

i carry your heart with me (i carry it in
my heart) i am never without it (anywhere
i go you go, my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing, my darling)
                                  i fear
no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) i want
no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)

All of Earl’s brothers and Sisters within the Winnipeg Terminal are deeply saddened with the loss of Earl. Wonderful memories are remembered as we worked with him. Especially the epic water fights at the west lead and card games during the midnight shifts.  We miss you Brother and Rest In Peace
