Josie Hill

JOSIE HILL
July 8, 1955 – December 5, 2025
After a short battle with cancer, Josie peacefully passed with her family by her side at Riverview Health Centre on December 5, 2025.
Josie will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her son Robert (Susie), daughter Melanie; granddaughters, Justine (James), Brittany, Rayleene, Adriel, Leona; and her beloved great grandsons, James and Jace. Josie is survived by her sister Victoria, brother John; nieces and nephews, Chris, Tamara, Damien and Angela.
Josie was born and raised in Winnipeg with fond memories of growing up in Point Douglas and living in the North End of the city. Her modest upbringing and loving family shaped the remarkable woman she became. Josie, while raising her young children returned to school where she completed 3 university degrees, a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Teaching and a Bachelor of Education in 7 years.
From there she went on to make enormous contributions to Winnipeg’s Inner City and Indigenous community. She was a founding member of Andrews Street Family Centre and Blue Thunderbird Family Care. She also played a pivotal leadership role at Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre.
Josie received numerous awards recognizing her tireless work and positive attitude in the community, including an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from The University of Winnipeg (2010), The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012) and The Order of Canada (2017), among many others.
Josie loved to travel with family and friends. Some of her favourite destinations were New Zealand, where she made many Maori friends, Ireland with her friend Elaine and Corpus Cristi with her friend Wendy.
Josie enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, playing cards, telling stories and laughing. More than anything, she loved being with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, they were her everything and always made her smile. When they were around, nothing else mattered.
Josie has made countless friendships in her life and will be joining her mother Jean and friends Elizabeth, Chris, Isobel, Wendy, Muriel, Lainie and Larry.
Thank you to Riverview Health Centre, Palliative care nurse Michelle and CIV nurse Epsi. Thank you, Dana, Steph and Candi, for being there in Josie’s final moments.
Josie lived well, laughed lots,
and loved deeply!
Her legacy lives on through
the lives she touched.
Forever in our hearts!

I had the honour to work alongside Josie on many community building services in the North End. Josie walked a path of humbleness, encouraging others to take chances to learn and grow. Josie was a kind teacher in the community that believed in providing opportunities for community members to improve where we lived. I am grateful for all the wonderful conversations and laughter. My condolences Josie's family.

Sending condolences to Rob and Melanie. Losing a parent is so hard.
Your mom was an incredible woman who achieved so much, not least raising you two.
Keep her memories close.
So very sorry for your grief.

When I started my social work career in the north end your mom quickly became someone I respected and learned so much from. She was very humble but did so very much. She never bragged but always put her hear, soul, love & laughter into everything. She will be missed by many - and by many you never knew. Please know your mom/kookum was one of the best! I'm sure she is at a legion, walking in a park and laughing with someon. RIP friend. Lorna Hanson

I am so terribly sorry dearest Josie has left us far too soon. Josie was one of our star students as she received her B.Ed degree at U of M. She was always laughing and enjoying life even though times were tough. She was a born leader and that came through loud and clear as she guided many agencies to be successful and help people. I sincerely hope Lainie and Josie are together again
having fun. My condolences to the family.

I'm very sorry for your loss . I knew Josie when both of us were young and she was working at Andrew Strwet Centre. She was always smiling and so full of energy. I always wondered how she was doing ... she wanted to make a difference and she did .

My very sincere condolences to all of her family. Josie and my Mom adored each other. She had the biggest heart.
In her last text to me she said "Soon your mom and I will be up to our old shenanigans!"
The world is a little dimmer without her giving spirit.
Rest Easy Josie
