BRIAN ISHENBERG

November 24, 1947 – August 10, 2024

Brian was born November 24, 1947 at 6:00 AM in the Neepawa Hospital, the long-awaited first child of Harold and Marion (née Simpson) Ishenberg. Brian’s early life was in the Mentmore District of Manitoba where he attended Gordon School, grades one to eight in a one-room schoolhouse. Brian spent a considerable amount of that time ice-skating, curling, and hanging out with friends at the Mentmore rink.

In 1962 the family moved to a new farm and home built by Brian’s father on the outskirts of Neepawa. Brian enjoyed the many opportunities that town life brought, playing on a hockey team, learning to golf, attending NACI, learning to play the trumpet in band class, and being a member of the Lion’s Club Band. Brian graduated on the honour roll from Neepawa Area Collegiate Institute in 1964 and set off to Brandon University at the age of 16 with a penchant to party. He also attended University of Manitoba and was a member of Phi Kappa Pi.

Following university, Brian’s varied skills and intelligence led him to pursue an array of interests and jobs, including as an importer and retailer of Mexican handicrafts in the 70’s, then working many years as a skillful, hard-working courier in Winnipeg. Brian bought his home on McMillan Avenue in the early 80’s where he enjoyed hosting many friends, gardening, and much time spent with his loyal dogs. Brian continued to golf and played on a slew of slow-pitch teams for the competition and refreshments that followed. Brian was an avid reader, music-lover, and watcher of live or televised sports. He followed politics and current events, offering his frank opinion on nearly any topic.

In July of 2024 Brian endured a series of strokes, was hospitalized and well cared for at the Victoria General Hospital. He passed peacefully on August 10, 2024. The family is deeply grateful to Brian’s dear friend Gloria Lasko for all her love, support, caring and kindness.

Brian is survived by his three sisters: Julie Elissalde (Jean Claude), Linda Hainstock (Clayton), and Moira Woods (Shawn). He will also be fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews: Pascal, Marion, Lindsay, Britt, Claire, Keely, Britton, and Gaby.

The family held a private celebration of Brian’s life in Neepawa, MB on Saturday, August 24th.

Brian’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.
