GORDON WILLIAM KITCHEN

October 30, 1946 - January 13, 2026

Peacefully, after a brief illness, Gordon Kitchen passed away at the Victoria Hospital in Winnipeg. Predeceased by his parents Gordon and Isabela Kitchen and Sister Ann, Gord is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joan, son David Kitchen (Sandra) daughter Jennifer Lane (Matthew) grandchildren Emmett, Arwen, Anna, and Oliver, sister Helen and many nieces and nephews.

Gord was born October 30th in Portage la Prairie. The youngest of Gordon and Belle Kitchen’s three children he was raised in Poplar Point on the family farm. He attended Poplar Point school where he participated in sports including football, hockey and his passion, baseball.

Gord moved on to high school in Portage la Prairie attending Portage Collegiate Institute where he and his 1964 Ford Fairlane caught the eye of Joan Smith. Gord and Joan married in 1967 and moved to St. Vital in Winnipeg.

Gord worked as a surveys technician for several years with the province of Manitoba. Shortly after the move to Winnipeg he began studying to certify as a Land Surveyor which would be the focus of his work for his entire career, serving as a member of and president for both the Association of Manitoba Land Surveyors and the Canadian Land Surveyors. Gord spent the better part of his career with the Government of Canada until his retirement in 2005.

Gord was a devoted husband and loving father and spent many hours coaching baseball, spending time with friends and family, and doing renovations at home and the cabin at Nutimik. Gord was a passionate sports fan whose love of the Winnipeg Jets could only be topped by that for the L.A. Dodgers whom he was thrilled to see win another pennant this past fall. Every project he worked on was made better by his lifelong love of music. Spending hours crafting playlists to serve as a soundtrack for life events, parties and get togethers with friends and neighbours.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at The Vic, and all the caregivers in his life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Hidradenitis Suppurativa Foundation (hsfoundation.ca)

A farewell for Gord will be planned for spring 2026 at the baseball field in Poplar Point.

Gord was always insightful and ready to help. Joan's Aunt Leila and Uncle Don loved him from the moment they met Gord. The family always looked forward to the Kitchen's visits to the farm near Belmont, Ontario. We are so glad we had a visit with both Joan and Gord this spring.

sincere condolences Joan, David and Jennifer, Gordie was/is my first cousin. I remember him well as children spending time at our grandparents and his parents homes in Poplar Point. Unfortunately we moved to Alberta and didn't get a chance to connect again. I hope your memories together will help in the future.

This one sure hits home! Gord and I were close boyhood friends since grade one at Poplar Point. The close group we hung with enjoyed life together from grade school, over our teenage years and well into our twenties. Sad to say, over time we had lost touch and as so often happens, life has led us down separate paths.

Even though I haven't seen my old pal for many years,I still consider him a special friend and will forever cherish the numerous memories and adventures of our formative years together!

Sincere condolences, Joan, David and Jenny!

Gordon was a colleague at Indian and Northern Affairs Canada. He was always pleasant to work with and could always be counted on for help and advice. I will remember him as one of the good people I met during my career with the Government of Canada.

Mrs. Kitchen, Jen and Dave,

Sincere condolences. My very first neighbours 🙂 Even to this day, the house next door to our old house in Southdale will always be "The Kitchens". Thank you for always having me to your home. Mr. Kitchen always liked to tease me as I'm sure he teased the kids' friends but I got to know the glint in his eye when he was as I got older 😄

May your memories guide you through your grief. The photos are lovely. Thank you for sharing ❤️

Joan, David, Jenn & Family.

I am so sorry to hear of Gords passing. All the memories come flooding in back to day when he hired this little ol Manitoba girl from the NWT. He knew I wanted to come home and he made it happen. I worked for Gord for 8 years and then with him even longer. He always kept a watchful eye over me, especially when I was pregnant. He was not only a boss but a friend. He will be so missed by so many, both family and friends. Condolenses from myself and Brad.
