JOEL SALTEL

June 15, 1963 – November 4, 2021

With heavy hearts, we announce that Joey Saltel passed away on November 4, 2021 at the age of 58 years.

He is survived by his two children, Samantha and Simon; mother, Donna; brother, Shane (Gail) ; and many beloved family and friends.

Joey was born in Portage la Prairie in 1963 to parents Donna Dearsley and Archie Saltel. The youngest of three boys, he was supposed to be a girl, but there he was! He was a mischievous toddler and a bit spoiled, being the youngest. He moved around quite a bit as a child, as his father was in the military, including Lahr, Germany for three years until the family posted in Edmonton in 1969, where he went to school in Griesbach on the base. When his parents separated in 1974, he and his brothers moved with mom to Spirit River, Alberta where they resided from 1976 to 1981. This is where he went to high school, and ended up making lifelong friends. In 1983, he moved with his mom to Winnipeg, Manitoba, living with her for a couple of years before getting his own place. During this time, he joined a band as the singer, which was the beginning of his long musical journey. Joey was very passionate about music, he came alive on stage and his energy was magnetic. He also apprenticed with his uncle, Maurice Saltel, as an electrician, eventually earning his journeyman certificate. But Joey, having a passion for helping others, eventually decided to return to school to become a physiotherapist. He loved that job, it suited him well with his remarkable ability to connect with people. All this time, he continued to play in bands and became quite popular as a singer in Winnipeg.

Joey made a lot of friends wherever he went, it was hard not to love him. Winnipeg is where he met the two mothers of his children, Samantha and Simon, who were his greatest achievements in his eyes. He was an amazing, supportive, and loving father. He stayed in touch with his family in Edmonton, including his mother, who will greatly miss his phone calls. It is hard to believe those conversations have come to an end.

Joey lost his father on October 12, 2020, as well as his brother, Kelly, shortly after on November 29, 2020. He missed them both terribly, he loved his dad and he considered his brothers his best friends. We hope that they are all reunited now and smiling down on the surviving family.

The family would like to thank everyone that helped organize his celebration of life, as well as all of those who attended. For anyone that could not attend, a full video of the service has been posted on his Facebook memorial page.

He will be greatly missed by many, but his memory will never be forgotten.
