Bettie Tackaberry

TACKABERRY, Elizabeth - Obit Photo_edited.jpg

October 5, 1944 - November 18, 2022

Surrounded by her family, Bettie passed away on Friday November 18th 2022, at the age of 78.

Mom was born Elizabeth Jean Neville in St. John’s Newfoundland, before it became an official province of Canada, on October 5th 1944. She spent her youth and early adult years growing up in Winnipeg where she met our dad, Bill Tackaberry. They married in March of 1963, welcoming their first child Scott in 1969, and completing their family with Erin in 1973.

They didn’t waste much time after that, moving to Gimli in 1978 to take over The Falcon restaurant. Mom spent her days busier than ever all of a sudden, making sure that every aspect of the restaurant/lounge ran smoothly. From managing staff, to waitressing, cooking, planning banquets while still raising us kids. Essentially she was everything to everyone.

In 1986 she helped transition us to Winkler, where she once again gave tirelessly of herself to own/operate Homestead service.

After our dad passed away she moved to Oakwest in Morden, where she made many new friends and volunteered in the kitchen often. We were so thankful for the new friendships she cultivated there.

Mom loved her children fiercely. She continued to give selflessly and tirelessly to us until her last breath. She never wanted to be a burden to anyone, to a fault. She loved her role as Nana to 8 grandchildren. She was so very proud of every milestone they hit, and bragged relentlessly to anyone that would listen.

In her younger years mom loved crossword puzzles, books and keeping up with local world events. She was the smartest woman we knew. When we were young and needed answers to things (before google) she was our go to. She always had the answers or would encourage us to “look it up” in an encyclopedia or dictionary. As technology advanced over the years, she loved her iPad and how she could communicate with everyone and look things up to her heart's desire.

Mom had so many unique sayings, alternate unusual words and different ways to pronounce things. It was always a joy to tease her about these things, and she always took it like a champ. She humoured us with her sass right until the end. She remained strong, loyal and feisty, true to herself and to us.

She is survived by her son Scott, daughter in law Lisa and their children: Bramwell( Annie), Malcolm, Lilith, and Delilah. Her daughter Erin and partner Chuck and Erin’s children: Leif, Adaira, Thor and Silas. Brother John (Bev) Neville, sister Marilyn ( Lloyd) Froment.Nieces  and nephews, lifelong friend Lila and many other long standing friends as well as new friends she made living at Oakwest.

She was predeceased by her mother and father George and Thelma Neville and her husband William “Bill” Tackaberry.

There will not be a service for mom as per her wishes. If you so choose to, we know her charity of choice would be Manitoba Cancer Care or the Boundary Trails Health Centre Foundation.

Special thanks to the team at Grace Hospital who helped our mom have a few last days to say our goodbyes, and to the family and friends who were with us at the end, as well as the many who have reached out.

We love you Mom, you fought the good fight.
