GERALD ERIC WONG
October 18, 1929 - September 3, 2023
With heavy hearts, we announce that Gerald passed away peacefully on September 3, 2023 at the age of 93.
Left behind to cherish his memory is his daughter Pamela and husband Hal in Orlando, Florida, daughter Debra and husband Dale, son Garry and wife Masako in Richmond, BC, daughter Donna and partner Pilar, daughter Tanis and husband Mark in Nanaimo, BC, daughter Tracy and husband Steve and Tom who was like a second son to Gerald. He also leaves many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gerald was predeceased by his wife Marion and his daughter Kimberley.
Gerald was born in Brantford, Ontario and grew up in Dundas, Ontario graduating from Westdale High School in Hamilton, Ontario. Gerald started working for Remington Rand/Univac Canada in 1951. He worked on all sorts of equipment from mechanical machines to vacuum tube machines to large main frame computers. Gerald often had to go on course in different cities to learn about the new machines he would be looking after and would come home and tell many stories about his time away. His favourite place seemed to be Princeton, New Jersey. His last job thanks to Steve Haines was shuttling cars for Avis Rent-a-Car. He truly loved going to work and engaging with other employees and best of all driving new cars. If he had to pick up a car in a different city he’d think of it as an adventure to see somewhere new and a chance to strike up a conversation with someone in a truck stop café.
He had a passion for fixing things whether it be cars or houses, he could fix or repair anything, and would look at something and figure out how to make it better than before. He grew up in the depression and knew what lean times were all about. He would never throw anything away that he thought could be fixed; “Besides you might need the part someday”. One of his greatest joys was his annual drive to Dundas, Ontario with his good friend Eugene Karpetz to visit his parents and repair their restaurant equipment when he had his summer holidays. Over the years Gerald managed to visit his sister Frances in Hong Kong, and visited Japan, and Hawaii.
He was good friends with all his neighbours and was more than willing to help them in any way possible. He lived the life he wanted to the very end. Many thanks to Steven Haines and Dale Michasiw for all the assistance they afforded him with his daily living near the end of his life.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00pm, Wednesday September 27, 2023 at 603 Wellington Crescent at Academy Road (Unitarian facility).
In lieu of flowers Gerry's preference would be to take a friend or your family out for dinner.
Gerald's family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.
