With great sadness, we announce that Greg passed away on April 25, 2019 in St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 62 years, following an unexpected heart attack. His daughters were with him at the time of his passing.

He is survived by his daughters Allison and Tracy; mother Irene; as well as siblings James and Wayne.

 

Greg Alsop was born in Neepawa, Manitoba. He grew up in Morden, where he lived with his mother, father, and two brothers. In this tiny town he embarked on daring swordfights as a caped crusader, went on gun-slinging adventures in the wild west, and played ball. Later he moved to Winnipeg, then to Vancouver, and back to Winnipeg! He must have liked it here for some reason (couldn’t have been the weather!), for here he stayed. He had two daughters and was a loving father throughout his life. He worked for many years as an accountant, crunching those numbers, sending out those cheques, and cultivating a truly wonderful and whimsical paperclip collection.

As the aforementioned paperclip collection may imply, Greg was a silly man with several notable quirks. He was a firm believer in the wondrous ability cookie dough possesses to improve nearly any situation. He coined many fantastic phrases such as “be the rainbow” and his trademarked, “it’s okay to be stupid on Sundays” – the latter of which he would employ nearly every Sunday when his daughters came to visit. He liked participating in fantasy sports pools, watching professional wrestling and hockey, and playing video games.

Greg both loved to tell and experience stories. From spinning elaborate bedtime tales, creating fantastical games to play with his daughters, writing poetic birthday cards, or a simple phone call, Greg always had a story to share. Whether it was in the form of television shows or video games, he never stopped loving being immersed in fantastical worlds – though he remained resolute in his conviction never to watch a movie all the way through at once. Those required three sittings, at least.

 

At the risk of making my father sound like a giant nerd, let me assure you that he had “cooler” interests as well! As evidenced by his extensive cassette collection, he was a devout lover of music. He was also passionate about sports. In his younger years, he enjoyed curling and playing softball. He played back-catcher, was the team captain, and in true prairie boy fashion, arranged softball games between teams made up of employees from different grain companies.

​

I don’t have to say a lot more about the way I feel about Greg Alsop. He is held in the utmost respect, with the utmost honour. The world has put hard times on us all by taking him out. He will be dearly missed.

In accordance with Greg's wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held.
