MILLICENT FRANCES FIDLER

“PENNY”

On Sunday November 19th, peacefully and surrounded by her family, our beloved Mother, Grandmother, Sister and Aunt, Penny (Nanny) passed away at the age of 86. She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed, and we will cherish the many beautiful memories shared with her.

Penny is survived by her sister Gloria (Brian), her sons, David (Krista), Ryan (Tracy), four grandchildren, Julia (Jordan), Noah, Madelyn, Reese and her niece, Laura.

Penny was predeceased by her parents Julia and William Hanas, and her husband Raymond Fidler.

Born December 10th, 1936, in Manitoba by a midwife on a train, Penny made her lifelong home in Winnipeg, where she lived and grew up. She married her husband, Ray, on May 6th, 1967, and they spent a few years travelling to different countries like Italy, Jamaica and Bahamas, to name a few, while she worked for Air Canada.

Penny was happiest being a mother to her two precious sons, David and Ryan. She would love to share stories about both as little boys and would laugh and constantly smile when talking about them playing sports…. hockey, football and baseball. She was the epitome of a sports mom! She was an extraordinary cook, baker and gardener!! She’d always call and ask if we were coming over for dinner and we told her she could make a fortune selling her perogies and banana cream pies, but she was just content making them for her family to enjoy.

In 1979, The Bay St. Vital opened and Penny was one of the first employees. She was a dedicated and loyal employee, hardly taking as sick day over her 32 years there. She finally retired in 2011 at the age of 75 and made many lifelong friends and memories from her time working at The Bay.

In 1997, Penny found her new love and passion, when she became a grandmother and embraced her new name, Nanny. She had the most special relationship with her four amazing grandchildren, and they loved her so very much. She rarely missed a band or guitar concert, piano recital, soccer, baseball or hockey game. She would look after the kids at the drop of a hat, or she would even ASK if she could babysit. That’s right, Nanny Extraordinaire. So many beautiful moments that will be remembered and talked about for years to come.

Penny was a generous, kindhearted and an all-around lovely lady. She left an impact on those she met. In November 2021, she moved into Meadowood Manor, where she would live out her last years, happy, safe and content. Our family would like to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to the many staff and nurses who cared for Penny.

There will be a public service to remember our beautiful mother, grandmother, sister, auntie and friend on Thursday December 14th at 1pm at Cornerstone Alliance Church, 1100 Autumnwood Dr., Winnipeg, MB.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to Meadowood Manor.
