DARLENE HAY

(née NICHOLS)

August 9, 1944 - May 2, 2021

With heavy hearts, we announce that Darlene passed away peacefully, in her home, at the age of 76 years.

Darlene will be terribly missed by her loving husband of 57 years, Kirby; daughter Jodie (Brent); son Kevin; grandchildren, Marley, Trenton, Mackenzie, and Olivia; sister Barb (Alf) Roberts; and extended family and friends.

Darlene was born in Carman to Leonard and Margaret Nichols.  She enjoyed a happy childhood on the farm with her parents and younger sister Barb.  She attended school at Tobacco Creek, followed by Wingham and Graysville.  She loved skating at recess and spending time with her family and friends, especially cooking with her mother.

She moved to Winnipeg after school and met the love her life, Kirby, whom she married May 30, 1964.  Together they raised 2 children, Jodie and Kevin.  In addition to being a mother, she started her career at Great West Life as a data entry operator and went on to work at Kleyson Transport and finally at IBM.

In retirement Darlene was busier than ever.  She and Kirby volunteered together on the board of the Manitoba Prostate Cancer Support Group where Darlene managed the database.  They also spent many happy winters in Arizona enjoying the company of so many good friends.  Her love for quilting was infectious.  She was the Piecemakers of Goodlife Programs Coordinator and taught quilting to others, including her husband Kirby.  She made quilts for not only family and friends but also for charity, including the Never Alone Foundation.  She continues to give love and warmth to so many through her quilts.

In keeping with Darlene’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal services will be held. Her family kindly requests that her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos and/or sharing your own memories and stories using the comment section on this page.

The family would also like to thank Dr Albak, Dr Desautel, Dr McIntosh and all the other medical professionals involved throughout her journey. Donations can be made in Darlene’s name to The Never Alone Foundation, CancerCare Manitoba or your charity of choice.
