Dianne Aftanas

DIANNE EVELYN AFTANAS
(née Romanik)
December 5, 1945 – September 10, 2025
Peacefully on September 10, 2025 in Winnipeg, our Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Baba, Dianne passed on to a better place.
Born on December 5, 1945 in Winnipeg, Dianne attended Norquay, Aberdeen and St. John’s High schools, working part time at Derry Dell where she was to meet her beloved husband to be Bernie, serving him jumbo deluxe milkshakes with piles of whipped cream. Her beautiful smile and gracious manner led him to propose, and they later married in 1968.
Dianne completed teacher training in Manitoba Teachers College and her first teaching position was in Emerson Manitoba, and later with the Winnipeg School Division at Margaret Scott School where she taught grades 1 and 3 until the birth of her twin daughters Karen and Kerry, and a year later her youngest daughter Angela. She continued to be involved in her children’s activities working as a volunteer in many school programs, sporting events as well as becoming a Brown Owl of the132nd Brownie Pack.
Dianne re-entered the workforce employed at Mappins Jewellers, Peoples Jewellers, Lotions and Potions and Hudson’s Bay at Unicity Mall where she made many good friends and always went that “extra mile” for customers.
Dianne enjoyed 5 pin bowling and served many years as a league executive on the Tuesday and Friday Leagues at Village Inn Lanes.
One of her passions was gardening, turning her back yard into a beautiful park with lovely flower beds, water garden, and bountiful vegetable garden, sharing the harvest with everyone she knew.
She was also an excellent cook, passing on her culinary skills to her three daughters, whom she loved passionately and to whom she constantly gave her Love and help.
Throughout her life, she was always there to help others and will be remembered for her generosity and kindness.
She leaves to cherish her memory her three daughters, Karen (Chris) Edmonton, Kerry (Shane)Winnipeg, and Angela (Corey) Louisville Kentucky; her beloved husband Bernie of 57 years; her grandchildren, Jeffrey, Michael, Cassie, and Julia.
She was predeceased by her mother and father, Mary and William Romanik; brother Edward (Kathy); mother and father in law, Mary and Antoni Aftanas; and a large extended family of brother and sisters in laws.
Thank you to the Riverview Health Centre Staff, and Manitoba Cancer Care, for their wonderful loving support.
A Celebration of Life with family and friends will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, even though Dianne would love to be surrounded by beauty she loved to create, please make donations to Cancer Care Manitoba, Winnipeg Humane Society, or Assiniboine Park.

I have known Dianne for about 35 years. we met bowling at the Westwood lanes shortly after my family moved to Winnipeg. We became friends instantly. We bowled together for years, shared coffee in each others homes regularly and met up at the Food court at the old Unicity mall for coffee. Our favourite activity though was yard sales. Most Saturday mornings we were joined by Joyce Hildebrand and the 3 of us went off in Dianne's truck looking for bargains. We hauled home lots of "bargains" that often were resold at a sale one of us held in a year or two later. Dianne was one of the kindest, most generous person I ever knew. A lot of the plants growing in my yard to this day came from her seeds or cuttings. She sure had a green thumb. Her yard was always so beautiful.. she would spend days redesigning her flower beds each summer and each new creation was so much more beautiful than the previous. So much talent! My condolences to Bernie and the 3 girls and their families. Dianne will be missed by so many.

As soon as I saw her picture, I was transported back to Margaret Scott School. I thought her and Mrs. Spryzak were the best teachers ever. She had such a warm smile. My deepest condolences to her husband, Bernie, her daughters Karen, Kelly and Angela, as well as her grandchildren. Be at Peace Mrs. Aftanas. Vichnaya Pam Yat

So incredibly sad to learn that dear Aunt Dianne is gone. So many memories. Here is a photo out at our family's cottage in August 1969.

My sincere condolences to Bernie and your daughters and grandchildren on the loss of a beautiful soul. Dianne was always ready with a smile whenever I had the pleasure of meeting her and Bernie on my trips to Winnipeg. She was a special lifelong friend whom I have known since our elementary schooldays.
She will be missed.

We grew up together, attended school together, found ourselves living in the same area after our marriages, bowled in the same leagues, and we would often reunite with other in later years. Our children even crossed paths through their school years. Diane was always ready to smile and laugh when we met. We will miss her.
Our sincere condolences to Bernie, Karen, Kerry, Angela and the grandchildren.

I was so lucky....I not only had Miss Romanik as my grade 1 teacher at Margaret Scott, in 1966, I had Mrs. Astanas as my grade 3 teacher! As a young girl, I Adored her!! She was kind and loving and patient. She has always been one of my Favourite teachers.
My condolences to her family.

I had the privilege of knowing Dianne since I was 12 years old, she was the mother of my best friend Angela.
She was the kindest, most loving person I was lucky to have in my life. She fed me, gave me love and kindness when I was growing up and did my laundry and always had a kind word to say. There is another angel in heaven and my love and deepest condolences go to her entire family.

Fond memories of catching up with Dianne and Bernie before each MTC show. For years my sister and I shared the seats beside theirs in the very back row. Some shows were great, some not so much, but we always arrived to our seats greeted by Dianne's warm and infectious smile and parted after the show with well wishes. Sincere condolences to Bernie and the family.
