LEONARD WILLIAM AKERSTREAM

1945 - 2024

Leonard William Akerstream passed away peacefully on December 31, 2024 at Seven Oaks Hospital in palliative care at the age of 79 after living a full and happy life.

Leonard was predeceased by his wife Sonja Rita Noehring (Sonny); younger sister Elizabeth; and his parents, Emily and Norman Akerstream.

He will be dearly missed by his daughter Christine (Adam); grandchildren, Quinn, Kayda and Oksana; younger sister Caroll (Al); and niece Roberta (Paul). He is also survived by his younger sister Doris (Lionel); brother-in-law Glenn; and nephew Shawn (Naomi).

In Leonard’s youth he played hockey and some football. In his early adult years he worked as a full time mechanic, did part time work as a security guard at music concerts, and also as a bouncer at a bar in Osborne Village called “The Zoo” (where he met his future wife Sonja who was a bartender there). He also worked many years for/as a manager in a large company that provided service and equipment, leaving only to form his own company, “L.A. Equipment”, which he ran successfully until retirement.

For many years Leonard loved fishing, camping, hunting, travelling, riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, attending music concerts, cooking meals, spending time with his buddies and friends, family members (especially with his grandchildren), his golden lab dogs, and especially with his absolute best friend Sonny. He deeply loved the home that he and Sonny had built, then lived in for over 30 years in the Kildonan area.

Later in his old age, he loved watching the Jets play hockey on tv with Sonny, spent much of his time surfing the net, watched movies on DVDs, having meals with his sister Caroll and Al, and also with his niece Roberta and Paul. He also loved watching the Blue Bomber games on tv with his niece Roberta and Paul.

He was always optimistic and full of hope during the challenging times both he and Sonny faced during the later years of their life together.

He was a son, brother, father, grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle and a friend.

He will be missed.

Leonard’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.
