ROBERT E. (BOB) ALLAN

1942 - 2023

Bob was born to Charles and Thelma Allan (née Olund) on December 17, 1942, at St. Boniface Hospital. He was the third child in a family of eleven. He passed away on June 3, 2023, at the age of 80 years.

He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Larry and Petey; and a sister, Elaine. He is survived by five sisters - Wendy (Roland), Heather (Robert), Kinnon (Ed), Sherry (Bruce), and Vicky (John); a sister-in-law, Barbara; and two brothers, David (Sylvia) and Ralph (Trudy); together with numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Bob leaves behind Anna, his wife of nearly 60 years; and three children, Robert John, Cathleen Anne, and Stephen James; also Anna’s brother, Joseph, a niece and nephew; and her sister, Adeline (Guy).

In August, 1960, Robert joined the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, which later became the CIBC. During his career he worked in various branches, both in Winnipeg and rural Manitoba. His first posting was at the Main & Dufferin branch. After that came 955 Henderson Highway, Mountain & McPhillips, Portage & Garry, and Polo Park. He opened the Portage & Arlington branch, worked at 118 Marion Street, and had two turns at One Lombard Place. In between these he was stationed in Killarney, Miami, and twice in Brandon. Most of these branches now are part of banking history. In 1995 he was officially retired, but a couple of years later returned to help rural branches with credit writing. He was stationed at Stonewall, but he was loaned out to other rural branches such as Gimli, Portage la Prairie, etc. The six month contract turned into years and finally in 2007 he decided to QUIT.

Robert enjoyed the customer side of banking (well, most of the time) but he and upper management didn’t always see eye-to-eye. A few co-workers would attest to that.

Bob was a member of the St. Boniface - St. Vital Kiwanis, where he served as Treasurer and, eventually, President. He enjoyed the meetings and socializing with other Kiwanis members, and working on major fundraising projects for St. Boniface Hospital and St. Amant.

Bob curled at the Heather Curling Club for many years. He became involved with the Heather Curling Club Executive, serving in the position of Treasurer for 23 years and as President in 2000. He was also on the Heather Rink Limited Board for 18 years as Treasurer and as a Director. He received an Honorary Life Membership for his many contributions, and the Heather Volunteer award. He was also presented with a Curl Manitoba volunteer award for contributions to his home club. Bob curled in the Heather Mens, Heather Commercial, Heather Seniors, and the CIBC Saturday League, both at the Heather and Rossmere clubs. Bob made many life long friends at the Heather Curling Club and he was well respected for his years of service to the club.

In Bob’s memory donations can be made to the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation, a charity dear to Bob and his family.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

While Bob & myself never worked in the same office I had the pleasure of auditing his branch on a number of occasions. Thoroughly enjoyed some of our discussions about ratings!! Also curled with Bob for several years at Heather.  Condolences to Anna and family. RIP Bob.

I had the pleasure of working with Bob twice.  I learned a number of valuable lessons from our time together.   Two of the most important points were that character matters and relationships don't work without trust.    Bob would stand up for anyone of character and you had a great ally if he trusted you.   I  would listen to him strongly advocate for his clients, (a  number of them would become friends.)      I once ended a call on his behalf. When he asked me why I  reached over and ended his call with the Regional office , I responded that I liked working with him.  Bob was very passionate about his family as well as work,  however, he did spend a lot of time at work.   We did work through the construction of a new branch which was a large undertaking.  Bob made the process bearable. I have many good memories of our time working together and I am thankful for what Bob taught me.    My condolences to Anna and the rest of Bob's family.  Tom Britten

Bob was my manager at the CIBC Norwood branch from 1980 to 1985. My memories of Bob are many, most were fun and hilarious and a few were somewhat frustrating on many Friday afternoons. He had "client meetings" at his other "office" across the street on Friday afternoons. A regular partner in crime was his very important client Pat. Wanting to go home for the weekend, before I could leave, I would have to collect Bob from his other office and send him home. He was a great advocate for both his staff and his clients.  Bob was a good man with a tough exterior but a softie at heart. He loved and was totally dedicated to his family. Rest in peace Bob and condolences to his family. Jane Hill .

Bob, was the branch manager of the Norwood CIBC branch when I first started my banking career. Although I was not there very long, Bob left a lasting impression with me, a man who was not afraid to advocate for his friends and clients sometimes against all odds. You could see that under that sometimes crusty exterior lived a very caring and gentle man, although I’m sure he would to this day deny it. My condolences to his family. René Dufault

Bob was a good man and I enjoyed his sense of humour and his frank honesty, which caused many a memorable moment. He certainly spoke often about his love for Anna & his kids.  Rest in peace Bob.  Neil & Val Hollingsworth.

I really thought Bob might live forever, just to be obstinate. Affectionately known as “Grumpy Bob” by the curling team, his bark was worse than his bite. I had the pleasure of curling with him at The Heather for many years. The last year I curled there we won “B” event, quite an accomplishment for our team. The final was a great game and Bob acknowledged my performance by saying: “Those were the only two shots you made all year”. He was truly a character, and will be missed greatly. Cheryl and I offer our condolences to Anna and the family. Alex and Cheryl Fedorchuk
