EVELYN INGIBJORG ALLEN

(née THORVALDSON)

November 22, 1931 – May 31, 2024

With heavy hearts, we announce that Evelyn I. Allen passed away on May 31, 2024 in Tuxedo Villa Extendicare, Winnipeg, Manitoba at the age of 92.

She is survived by her children, Glenn Allen (Diane Pearce) and Valerie Bakker; her grandchildren, Elizabeth, Sara, Kristina, Katie, and Kim; her great-grandchildren, Toby, Emily, Victoria, Hannah, and Sophia; and her two remaining siblings, Margaret (her dear younger sister) and Sveinn (Ab).

Evelyn was born in the R.M. of Bifrost to her mother Svanfridur Lilja Thorvaldson (née Sigurgeirson) and her father Thorvaldur R. Thorvaldson and was the oldest daughter of their large Icelandic-Manitoban family. She was filled with a huge love of music and an appreciation of learning and literature as well as a strong sense of pride in her Icelandic heritage. Some of her accomplishments included becoming the winner of the 1967 Rose Bowl Vocalist Trophy and representing Manitoba singing as a soloist in Ottawa at Parliament Hill for the July 1, 1967 Canadian Centennial celebrations. Married in 1953 and moved to Montreal with her husband in support of his career as a broadcast engineer. Upon returning to Winnipeg with him and two small children in tow in 1959 she made a life for her family as a homemaker in St. James and worked as the Secretary of the Staff Education Department at Grace Hospital. While her involvement in music continued with choir singing and a brief stint in dinner theatre it was her encouragement for her children in music appreciation that is her lasting legacy.  Her engagement with the C.A.D.S. organisation cofounded by her husband (Canadian Association of Disabled Skiing now the Canadian Adaptive Snowsports) led to being selected as the Volunteer of the Year in 1999. Hers was a life lived in support of others.

Much gratitude to the staff of Tuxedo Villa Extendicare for their care from Aug 2023 till her passing. A special thanks to the staff and family of Thorvaldson Care Centre where she resided from Sept 2016 till Aug 2023. Those were some of her happiest years.

In Accordance with the family’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and no formal service will be held. A graveside internment for both Evelyn and her husband (Doug Allen) who predeceased her in 2010 will be held this summer.

Evelyn’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.
