HELEN ELISE ALLEN

September 6, 1928 - January 23, 2026

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Helen “Elise” Allen at the Grace Hospital January 23, 2026, at the age of 97.

Elise was born in Toronto to Walter and Lila Wells on September 6, 1928. She attended University of Toronto to attain her home economics degree and teaching certificate. While taking classes in university, caught the eye of a fellow classmate who was often seen having naps on his desk. This George Hobson Allen soon became her husband on December 27, 1951.

George's pursuit of a masters degree led them to New York City for a few years. A new career with the YMCA then brought them back to Toronto, then Edmonton, then finally settling in Winnipeg since 1970. Being a mother of 3 boys, Andrew, Martin and Eric, kept Elise busy. She also enjoyed gardening, dogs/cats, birdwatching, travelling, learning piano, playing cards and square dancing. For many years, she was involved as a volunteer at the Craft Guild. Elise enjoyed the company of her neighbours on Glenview Avenue, particularly her best friend Elsie Reimer. She was able to live fairly independently in her own home until the age of 95. At that point, a move to Assisted Living at the Canoe Club and then later, a transition to Harmony Court at Riverwood Square were in order.

Elise was predeceased by her beloved husband George in 2009, son Andrew in 2024, daughter-in-law Dorothy also in 2024, her father Walter in 1951, her mother Lila in 1948 and older sister Ann in 2018.

Survived by sons Martin (Faye) in Crystal City, Eric (Wendy) in Winnipeg. Grandchildren Kimberley (Ray), Michael (Emma), Trevor (Sarah), Jennifer (Dan), Nick (Hope), Tyler (Ashley), Jordan (Janine) and Lisa (Riley). Great-grandchildren Archer, Jedediah, Keziah, Finnley, Haidyn, Arthur, Hamish, Toby, Imogen, Jacob, Lily, Sebastian, Alexis, Roxanne, Munroe, Lauren, Evelyn, Isabelle and Callum, with 1 more to arrive soon. Two great-great-granddaughters Allana and Philippa.

Special thanks to the staff at Bach House at Harmony Court. They provided exceptional care and compassion for the last 9 months. Also thank you to the staff on 4 North at Grace Hospital. Their kindness and care of Elise was so greatly appreciated.

Private family graveside service will occur at a later date.

My deepest condolances to Elise's family

For many years I enjoyed her contributions to the discussion book club at SMRUC.

Sincere condolences to Elise's family-- we knew Elise and George as long-time neighbours on Glenview Ave, fellow-congregants at St. Vital United and later St. Mary's Road United Churches, and as baroque music enthusiasts and supporters of the Musick Barock ensemble. Elise and George were among the handful of neighbours who always answered the door when we came canvassing as volunteers for various charities and were happy to purchase Girl Guide cookies from our daughter. In later years, Elise was always happy to stop and pass the time of day while walking the dog. Kind and generous people and lovely neighbours-- they are both missed. 45 Glenview Avenue will always be "Allen's house" to us!
