Monte Allison
MONTAGUE "MONTE" COWAN ALLISON
September 24, 1935 – February 18, 2023
It is with sad but peaceful hearts that we say goodbye to our father. Monte passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Saturday, February 18, at 9:00 pm, at St. Boniface Hospital, with his son and daughter at his side.
Monte was born September 24, 1935 in Rossland, B.C. Monte was a member of the Canadian Military. He served in wartime in Korea at the beginning of his career and later achieved the rank of Sergeant in the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI).
Following retirement, Dad kept busy with various jobs, working with the Commissionaires at the Airport, as a guard at Headingly Penitentiary, and working in the paddocks at Assiniboine Downs racetrack. Dad was a student of Canadian and British military history and loved to learn and share interesting stories and facts on these topics. He was also a huge fan of classic movies from the Golden Era as well as early Westerns, and a devotee of his morning Winnipeg Free Press, a habit he kept up religiously.
Monte was predeceased by his brothers, Robert, George, Don and William. He is survived by his sister Evelyn; brother David (Alice); his four children, Barry, Ryun (Laura), Susan, and David (Lorriena); six grandchildren Melissa (Kevin), Michael (Amy), Jaymee (Tineesha), Aaron, Emily and Catherine; as well as his nine great-grandchildren.
Special thanks to the doctors and nurses at St. Boniface Hospital for their care in his final hours. Thank you to the amazing doctors, nurses, and staff at Golden Links Lodge for their support over the past two years. Monte moved into Golden Links at the height of the pandemic, and the staff there provided excellent care and compassion in the most difficult circumstances that can be imagined.
A Celebration of Life to be held later this summer.
Monte's family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Dad's memory may be made to the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation.
