GEORGE ANASTASIADIS

December 4 ,1948 - December 2, 2019

On December 2, 2019, George Anastasiadis, passed away peacefully in the Riverview Heath Centre at the age of 70 years.

He is loved and will be sadly missed by his sons, Andreas (Chelsey), Thomas, Granddaughter Lyla, sister-in-law Polixeni, Nieces, Nephews, cousins and friends.

George was born in the small town of Platy (Greece) the youngest of three brothers and two sisters. He Moved to Canada in 1966, at the age of 17, and began his working career painting with his oldest brother (Konstantinos) while learning the English language. George then travelled west to northern Alberta and worked as a painter before moving to British Columbia where he got a taste for the restaurant business. He came back to Winnipeg where he and his brothers opened a few of their own.

Despite the grueling schedule of the restaurant business George taught the boys how to skate (amazingly without being able to skate himself) which turned into shuffling kids and hockey bags around town to various games and tournaments.

George worked hard his whole life and when he retired, he spent a lot of time getting to know his granddaughter, Lyla.

He also spent a lot of time in his hometown of Platy, Greece with his sister (Despina). He would sit for hours in the beautiful marble porch which overlooks the expansive garden of flowers and fruit sipping Greek coffee.

George will always be loved and remembered for his positivity, kindness, graciousness and unwavering loyalty to family and friends.

Friends and relatives are encouraged share memories, stories, and/or condolences for the family by using the comment section on this page.

The family would like to thank all of the healthcare staff for their kind and caring support of George as he made his final journey.

A celebration of George’s life will be held at 2:00pm Thursday, December 12, 2019 at 603 Wellington Crescent at Academy Road (Unitarian Church).

Your journey these past five months was very difficult for us all.  You are a wonderful Dad to our sons and a loving Papu to our granddaughter. I have  some good memories of raising our family and we have had some good visits and conversation these past months. Your memory will live on, rest in peace and we know that you have now gone to get well. Fondly, Gayle.

The AHEPA Family expresses its deepest sympathy and condolences to the family of Brother George Anastasiadis.  After becoming a member in 2008 George served the chapter with devotion and dedication in many ways for numerous cultural and charitable activities of the Order and community.  Whether it be cooking for the Greek Fest or assisting with other AHEPA charitable events, his kind efforts contributed to the virtues of philanthropy and humanism that are ideals of Hellenism.  His lighthearted humour always brought enjoyment to those that knew him.   He will be fondly remembered but sadly missed.  May God bless his soul and may his memory be eternal (Eonia Eimnemi). Our family was blessed to have George in our lives for the time we did. He was so kind and optimistic to be around and we loved him dearly. My youngest daughter still fondly remembers how he brightened her childhood with his stories, games & laughter. He will always have a special place in my heart. My deepest sympathies and prayers for his family.

Blessings to you, George on your journey now.  ...I don't know what to say about the Greek afro and stash from the 70's tho...LOL. Always a warm and smiling man who loved children and family, as is seen in these pictures! And so proud of your boys and how they attended to you with love in your last months, especially. xoxo Barbara❤

Mr George, thank you for everything. The moments that we spent together, will be in my heart. I remembered the past days, when you walked in the neighbourhood's street, when we talked about football, politics, history and economy. I want to share with your sons, a poem of Greek poet Odysseas Elitis, who won the Nobel prize in literature (1979). And my desire, for your memory, is to write the poem in Greek language: "Ανοίγω το στόμα μου και αναγαλλιάζει το πέλαγο, και φέρνει τα λόγια μου στις σκοτεινές του τις σπηλιές, και στις φώκιες τις μικρές τα ψιθυρίζει, τις νύχτες που κλαιν των ανθρώπων τα βάσανα." My deepest condolences to Andreas and Thomas. Your friend from Plati (Greece), Simos.
