MONA PAULETTE ANDERSON

(née Belanger)

August 2, 1954 – July 21, 2025

Mona Anderson (née Belanger) died peacefully after a brief illness on July 21, 2025. She insisted on the use of “died” for her obituary instead of “passed away”.

Mona is survived by her only daughter Holly (Brent); brother Gil; sister Lynn; mother Yvette; and special cousin, Paul. She will be missed by long-time friends Mai and Jhonnie of Tsawwassen, British Colombia; and long-time friend Carol. Mona will also be missed by many friends and colleagues made in her 30plus year career with the City of Winnipeg.

Mona loved knitting, such as is evidenced by the ever-growing number of throw pillows and scarves now in the possession of her daughter. She also loved to garden only to give most of the produce away, along with all that knitting.

Mona enjoyed going for long walks at King's Park, watching movies (and quoting them) and reading. She enjoying Tae Kwon Do, having obtained her black belt when she was over 50.

Mona enjoyed champagne and the occasional sip of Bailey's.

Mona was also well known for her love of the colour white (and subsequently spilling all over whichever white shirt she wore), asking (or pleading...) Holly to stop getting tattoos (mom, it never worked), a good pun and relating to the Wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz (her words).

Mona noted she lived a good life and said "I'm looking forward to my next adventure". She lived her life her way, the way she wanted and lived it well. Her only regret was not learning double dutch.

A thank you to the staff at Victoria Hospital and Unit Five North for their care and compassion.

A special and heartfelt thank you to staff K, A, M, S, E, L and J, all of whom provided compassion, care and laughter in Mona's final week.

As per Mona's final wishes, there will be no formal service. However, for anyone wishing to make a donation in lieu of flowers, can do so to Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre. She also requested you make a toast with Champagne, Bailey's (on ice), or your favourite beverage.

Mona’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

We were very sorry to hear about Mona's illness and death. We'd chat as she walked by on one of her many walks.

Im so sad to hear of her passing. We met on the bus about 30 years ago and ended up becoming friends. We had a lot of laughs in my backyard/pool and loved going to Phoenix Square for lunch, or just hanging out. You will be missed Hugs my friend

I met Mona in grade 8 at Ness Junior High School and we have been friends ever since. In those days we bonded over making the cheerleading squad. That carried on to senior high school at John Taylor Collegiate. From that time onwards we have always been in each other's lives despite my many moves abroad and across Canada. Whenever I was in Winnipeg we would meet up. Mona would always pull out her school yearbooks and entertain me with many stories that had us laughing and talking for hours.

Some years back we attended John Taylor Collegiate's reunion with multiple days of events. At the dinner/dance event we had an amazing time on and off the dance floor. We were among the last to leave which had Mona laughing anytime it came up in conversations. Somewhere is a beautiful photo Holly took of us before leaving for the event.

Holly you always made your mom proud . Her love for you was unconditional and made her heart sing. You were part of every conversation we shared. I see pieces of her in you. When you met and married Brent he became part of her circle of love.

Mona's mischievous sense of humour, easy laughter, beautiful smile, kind and generous spirit, loyal and dear friendship are just a few things about her I shall remember fondly and miss forever. Thank you Mona for our times together. I love you and will miss our long talks. ♥️♥️♥️

First met Mona at John Taylor Collegiate and happened to cross paths again when I started work at the City of Winnipeg. Lots of stories, makes me smile remembering them all. You will be missed my dear friend.

I met Mona back in our Marble Club days (if you know, you know) and we have been in each other's lives ever since. She had a great sense of humor, and cracked herself up, as much as the person she was entertaining with a story. Her greatest accomplishment, and source of pride was, of course, Holly. You being a kind, thoughtful, intelligent, and compassionate human being, with a wicked (warped 😛) sense of humor, and a loving partner by your side, is all your mom needed for her to rest easy. You are her legacy, well done Mona 💗

Special cousin Mona will be sorely missed. I already miss the Wizard of Oz reference on her voicemail. We used to joke about how she could promote a favorite restaurant based on the amount of sweet and sour sauce on her shirt!❤️
