One year ago - “Forever In Our Hearts”

On Tuesday, June 21, 2022, Benjamin William Andrews, age 59 years, passed away at the Brantford General Hospital. Born 27 October 1962 in Westphalia-Balve, Germany, Ben was the second child born to Bob Andrews and Doreene Frazer (nee Hornby).

He is survived by his children: Jade Cranfield (Chas), Christopher Andrews (Courtney) and Konor Andrews. Grandchildren: Alfie Cranfield (Lizzie), Eddie and Nichole Cranfield. Siblings: Kathy Darvill (Dennis), Bruce Andrews (Margaret), Christie Netzlaw (Jim), Jennifer Levett (Randy). Many nieces and nephews.

Ben attended elementary school in both Winnipeg, Manitoba and Smiths Cove, Nova Scotia. In 1974 the family moved again to CFB Shilo, Manitoba. As a teenager Ben enjoyed playing hockey and intramural sports during the noon hour. He attended high school at Crocus in Brandon, Manitoba. After finishing Grade 11 Ben decided to join the Canadian Navy in Halifax, Nova Scotia for a short period. He returned to the Brandon area for a few more years. His daughter Jade was born and within a year he made the trek to England as his daughter’s mother was from there. Ben returned to Canada after a brief time in England and didn’t connect with his daughter again until much later in life.

Ben always had a heart for Nova Scotia and the area so when he came back from England, he settled in the Halifax area. He later became a Lineman for Nova Scotia Power. Both Christopher and Konor were born there.

Due to his many years of playing hockey recreationally and the job as a Lineman, he incurred several concussions and had to stop climbing poles and take a supervisory job. This was very hard on him as he was always on the front lines. While Ben may not have been able to climb the poles anymore his legacy was mentoring the next generation of linesmen including his son Christopher. Ben shared at his dad’s funeral that he has taken and used what he showed him through the years. Ben had a young apprentice ask him how he knew as much as he did and without having to think at all he answered, “My dad showed me.” The greatest thing his dad taught him was not to judge a person by what you see.

Ben moved to Ontario and worked for Black & McDonald Ltd. and Powerline Plus. Christopher joined him as an apprentice and was mentored by his dad.

He took up golfing and enjoyed playing every chance he could get. He even had the chance to play the course at The Rise Golf Course in Vernon, BC which was a highlight for him.

Ben died peacefully after a short battle with cancer surrounded by his loved ones.

You made a difference and had a huge impact on everyone you knew and loved. Your legacy will live on forever and will ALWAYS be remembered!
