JOAN ANDRIES

(née Winstone)

January 26, 1939 - November 30, 2024

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Joan Andries (née Winstone) in the early morning hours of Saturday, November 30th, 2024, after a brief illness.

Joan is survived by her siblings Don Winstone and Donna Sainsbury; her nieces and nephews (Donna, Sharon, Gwen, Cheryl, Brent, Bruce, Lara, Pam & Troy), great nieces & nephews, and extended family members. Joan was predeceased by her husband Richard Andries (2017); siblings: Vern (1947), Corrine (1999), Wayne (2018) and Elaine (2020); her siblings-in-law: Don Black (Elaine), Donna Winstone (Don), Peter Sainsbury (Donna); and parents: Charles Arthur and Grace Margaret Winstone. Joan will be deeply missed by her family and her friends, bridge partners, neighbours, and co-workers. Joan was a woman of many talents and passions, and her memory will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know her.

Joan was raised in Birtle, MB, and moved to Winnipeg in her teens. Joan and Richard met in Winnipeg and were married for 34 years until his death in 2017. They both shared a passion for gardening and dancing. Joan had a zest for life that was truly inspiring. Her ability for entertaining was unmatched—she revelled in hosting extravagant dinner parties, where she delighted in preparing delicious multi-course meals that brought joy to her guests and showcased her creativity. Whether it was gardening in her spacious backyard or spending time at the lake, these things brought her peace and joy. Many fun years were had at her cottage in Albert Beach and at numerous family gatherings at Whytewold Beach. Family was very important to her, and we will miss her more than we can say.

Her working life spanned almost 50 years. She started out at the Telephone company (MTS) – with her life-long friends Margie Grainger and Ruth Wallie – and then she moved on to her forever job as a flight attendant starting with Transair in the late 1950’s and continuing for 40+ years with various airlines. Joan toured the world – both through her job and because of her own love of travelling. She went on amazing trips with many of her friends including Violet Halicki and her dear friend Edith Henchey. Joan had enduring friends that she valued from her work, some of whom joined her for their long-standing Wednesday Bridge Club. She also had lifelong friendships with Margie and Ruth (along with sister Donna) who made up the “Quad Squad”, going to Puerto Vallarta numerous times in recent years.

Joan’s memory will be forever cherished in our hearts, and we are grateful for the love, laughter, and warmth she shared with us. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and a life well-lived. Her memorial will be an outdoor garden party next summer, as per her wishes. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to donate to a charity of your choice.

I miss my sister. I miss Joan's daily phone calls and uplifting banter. We could chin-wag for quite a while and talk about anything. With each phone call, we seemed to solve the world's problems.... almost.

Joan had the courage to always to be herself - a classy lady - while also appreciating the simple things in life.

She had an eye for everything beautiful, the ordinary miracles of life; such as - the Lake, puppy dogs, trees, birds, chipmunks, and butterflies.

She showed joy and awe for all the treasures of life. I will always miss you, sis. Love, Donna

I was inspired by my Auntie Joan to be myself - to be independent, to live a life according to one's own beliefs, to push myself gracefully with conviction, while maintaining a duty and commitment to family, "accepting' while moving forward throughout life's challenges and triumphs.

I will cherish the some 50 years of memories I have of her, precious times indeed.... her support of my trip to Disneyworld, my higher education, and my many moves across Canada. I fondly remember times at her cottage and discussions between us on the British history of the Lake and the Victoria Beach area. Talking about pebbles, stones, and the Ice Age, and how the Lake came about. She was very wise in her own way.

I have so much to say..... I will endeavour to continue to live my life in the manner she encouraged. She will be forever in my heart.

My Auntie Joan was one in a million. I feel forever grateful for all the times I was able to spend with her. I was the "lucky niece" in Winnipeg growing up with her 10 minutes away.

She always showed me she loved me in so many ways and I always felt special around her. As she did for so many people, she was an amazing hostess who was generous and made such delicious food for us.

She was fun, and kept trying to get me in to playing Bridge, as her sister, my Auntie Corinne did also. I will do it, as I have like playing games with trump in them.

Missing you lots, and sending love to where you are now. Love Always, Lara (Winstone)
