JUSTIN EUGENE JOSEPH ASSAILLY
October 29, 1939 – May 8, 2025
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Justin (Stan) Assailly in Winnipeg, Manitoba, at the age of 85.
He is reunited with his late wife Dorothy (Feb. 2024); and is survived by daughters, Sherry (Mike) Savard, Jan (Bill) Ranson, Michelle (Terry) Higham; grandchildren, Kayla (Kevin) Harold, Justin Savard (Jennifer Hulmes), Meaghan Ranson (Patrick Tuominen); and great grandchildren, Jada Harold and Kade Tuominen.
He was part of a large family and leaves behind siblings, Eugene (Cecelia) Assailly, Jeanette Dutchak, Tilly (Ken) Thompson, Raymond (Joanne) Boisvert, Genny (Henry) Haun, Marian DeLaurier; as well as brother-in-law Einer Inman; and sisters-in-law, May Assailly and Agnes Boisvert. He was predeceased by his father Jean Assailly; and mother Irene Boisvert; as well as brothers, Lionel Assailly and Eduard Boisvert; and sister Claudette Inman. Also left to mourn is an extra-large extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends from over time.
Justin was born and raised in Laurier, MB and after a short but memorable time on the railroad he moved to Thompson to work at the nickel mine (Inco). He married Dorothy in August of 1961 and started their family in the growing northern town.
He built a cabin on Setting Lake and spent many years enjoying the upkeep of the cabin as well as fishing in the summer and snowmobiling in the winter. The cabin was definitely his happy place and gave him the start to his wood working hobby. Not only did he build the cabin from the ground up he also build multiple pieces of furniture.
He retired from Inco in the fall of 1992 and along with Dorothy moved into their new home in East St. Paul. Spending the first few years of his retirement working hard on the yard getting it just perfect. He started getting together with others that had now retired from Inco and had moved to Winnipeg and surrounding areas. Each week they gathered for coffee and made golf arrangements for the days ahead. When not in his yard or on the course he was in the garage building more furniture or “just puttering”. He also never missed the opportunity to go out to the farm and help with harvest season. He may have worked harder after retirement than he ever thought he would.
Family and friends will remember Justin as a quiet man, he let Dorothy do most of the socializing. However, if there was ever someone in need of his help, he was always there to lend a hand. We are all thankful that he will be back with Dorothy as he sure missed her this past year.
The last few years of life proved to be difficult ones for both Justin and Dorothy. They sold the family home and moved into River Ridge 2 and then to Shaftesbury Park Retirement Residence. The family wish to send our overwhelming thanks to SPRR staff members Resmijah and Karen for their friendly care and compassion during those difficult times. The family would also like to acknowledge the exceptional care of the Doctors and Nurses on the palliative care ward of the St. Boniface hospital.
In accordance with the family’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family service is scheduled in June.
Justin’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.
