ANNE ELEANORA ASSELSTINE

(née JOHNSON)

November 15, 1933 – January 6, 2021

Quietly and peacefully, we lost our beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Anne is pre-deceased by her husband Cliff; daughter Christine; and two sisters, Inga Smart and Julia Wyton.  Anne is survived by her two brothers, Harvey and Larry Johnson; daughter Joanne (Frank); son David (Caroline), son Paul (Shaunna), son Ryan (Lesli); eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Anne was one of five children to Joe and Elsie (née Ebbeling) Johnson. She was born on the family farm just east of Moosomin, SK, close to the Manitoba border. At the age of 16, Anne left the farm to board in Moosomin so that she could graduate high school. While waitressing to put herself through school, Anne fell in love with a frequent late-night patron, Cliff (1929-2015). In 1956, she graduated as a registered nurse and shortly thereafter married Cliff. In 1958, they moved to Birtle to start a new life raising five children and starting two businesses. There was never a moment that went by where Anne wasn’t thinking about someone else, especially her children. She is remembered for her selflessness, compassion, along with an amazing sense of humor. But perhaps most of all, she will be remembered for her unconditional and unwavering love of family. As we grieve the passing of Anne, we are comforted knowing that she is once again with Christine and Cliff - together again, this time for eternity.

A family service will be held at a later date. In the meantime, Anne’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by watching the photo-biography above. They also encourage the sharing of photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

To the staff at the River East Personal Care Home, we thank you, from the bottoms of our hearts, for the comfort and care you provided Anne through these unprecedented and challenging times.

My memories of my sister-in law Anne were very special. She was like the sister I never had. She was a good wife to my brother Cliff.and a very caring mother to her children.I admired how Anne was able to manage her business so efficiently as well as her household and have time for family and friends. I always felt so welcome whenever I visited.  I remember being there when they celebrated Birtle's Centennial and being proud of them as they rode in the parade in their fancy attire in the horse drawn buggy. Anne's life was a life well lived and she is now at peace  receiving the rewards that were awaiting her.

I have wonderful memories of your mom I spent a lot of time at Joe and Elsies when I was young. Your Mom spent hours playing cut out dolls with me, she was a patient loving person I still remember her laugh. Condolences to your family from Jackie Snell Peckover.
