CATHERINE ATKINSON

September 5, 1956 – March 20, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Catherine Atkinson on March 20, 2024 after a short battle with cancer.

Cathy is survived by her brother Larry, sister Cheryl (David), nieces Kailey (Evan) and Michelle.

She is predeceased by her mother who she lived with and took care of for many years.

Cathy attended Riverview school, Gordon Bell High School, and RB Russel School.

Cathy worked for 38 years at Deer Lodge Center working in the dietary department, as a nurse’s aide, and in the respiratory departments until she enrolled in RRCC and graduated from the Recreation Facilitator program. She was a very kind and gentle person, and she thoroughly enjoyed the time she spent with the residents and planning all their activities.

She loved to travel and had many adventures with her sister Cheryl and her nieces, Kailey and Michelle. There was the “girls” trip to Jamaica that started it all and many more. A weekend in San Jose that ended up being a 10-day tour of California.  Another weekend trip to Hartford, Ct that turned into an 11-day tour of the New England states complete with a trip to Martha’s Vinyard. The horse related trips with Michelle to the World Equestrian games in Kentucky including a stop at Churchill Downs, and of course trips to Spruce Meadows, Calgary for the National. Plus, many more wonderful adventures and memories.

Another favorite past time was crafting. If it is a craft, Cathy tried it. She made many beautiful Petite point pictures, handmade quilts, knitted Afghans, crocheted baby outfits for the girls and in the last few years she had dabbled in painting as well.

Cathy was a second mother to her nieces and was very involved in every aspect of their lives. She was always there to support them in any way she could. They enjoyed many outings, road trips, and just spending time with Auntie. Many of their favorite and often talked about memories are the trips to West Hawk Lake with Auntie and Grandma. There was plenty of laughter, many treats and even a song or two! I GIVE YOU A SONG, FOR PEACE & LOVE…

Cathy was not just an amazing sister but also a best friend. Usually if you found one of us the other would not be far behind.  We enjoyed spending time together and just hanging out. She especially enjoyed our drives to the Whiteshell and to Gimli or wherever the road took us.

A family Celebration of Life for Cathy will be held at a later date.

Cathy will be forever loved and forever remembered.

Cathy's family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Many happy memories of Cathy, from the halloweens she loved to socials, Christmas events, dietary etc. We learned how to make wine together and obviously drink many bottles of our work. My sympathies go to Cheryl and her family.

So sorry for your loss Cheryl(David), Michelle, Kailey(Evan) & Larry.

Cathy left us far, far too soon.

As far back as I can remember Cathy was always a caregiver. Always there for grandma Gibbings & also caring for mom(Gladys) till the end of thier days. She was an amazing proud & endearing auntie towards Kailey & Michelle she loved dearly. A shadow to sister Cheryl, traveling the world together and crafting(china dolls, knitting, petty point...)

I'll miss your laugh, from our get togethers(we had many), but I know there will be many open arms of family & relatives waiting for your arrival in heaven.. RIP dearest Cathy. Another angel is born

With deepest sympathy, cousin Brenda & the entire Gibbings family.
