Edith Austin-Anderson

Obituary Photo

In Loving Memory of

EDITH LOUISE AUSTIN-ANDERSON

Edith is beloved by family, cherished by friends, and respected by colleagues. She passed from this life June 25, 2025. While her farewell was expected, it came far too soon, leaving us all deeply saddened.

Born the fourth of six children in Nova Scotia, Edith grew up in a household bound by love and shaped by the early loss of her father, Henry Austin. Under the steady example of her mother, Katherine (MacVicar) Austin, Edith and her siblings embraced every challenge with grace, never disappointing the high hopes set before them.

Edith earned her BSc (Honours) in Educational Psychology at Acadia University, then her BEd and Masters in Education at Western University.

Edith began her career in London, Ontario, teaching children with disabilities. She moved to Winnipeg where she taught in several schools before answering the call to school administration. She loved her career in education and spent the final eight years as Principal of her beloved Kent Road School. Even after retirement, the warm, enduring friendships she maintained with colleagues speaks volumes about her caring heart and steadfast leadership.

Being geographically distant from her Nova Scotian roots, Edith modelled her mother’s Cape Breton hospitality by building a large family of friends in Winnipeg. She opened her home for weekly Sunday afternoon gatherings. During her summer holidays at Victoria Beach, her happy place, she loved hosting her family and friends.

Above all, Edith’s greatest pride was her role as a grandmother. No phone call with Edith was complete without her sharing the latest triumphs and snapshots of Jordyn in British Columbia, and Lottie and Pippa in Winnipeg. She proudly called them “the smartest, best-looking, most adorable children in the world”.

Edith is lovingly remembered by her husband, Bill; son, Athen; daughter, Alexandrea and daughter in law, Sarah; and her three grandchildren. Though her parents and sister, Lottie Austin (George Evelyn) predeceased her, she leaves behind grateful siblings Charles (Linda Austin), Elizabeth (David Austin), James (Sally Austin), and Eleanor (John Dever).

Her family extends heartfelt thanks to her dear friend Andrea Cibinel, whose compassion and regular updates during Edith’s illness brought comfort to those far away. They also wish to recognize the wonderful support and love that her friends willingly gave throughout. “Thank You” also to the excellent medical teams at CancerCare Manitoba, Home Care Manitoba, and St. Boniface Palliative Care.

Our dear Edith will be

forever missed, forever loved.

Two Celebrations of Life for Edith will take place, one in Manitoba and one in Nova Scotia. The particulars of both celebrations will be announced later.

Edith was passionate about children’s literacy. In keeping with her wishes, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Children's Heritage Education Endowment Fund via this Donation Form. Please indicate donations to be directed to Kent Road School. All donations will be used to purchase books for the Kent Road School library.

Donations, in her memory, may also be made to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation by clicking here

Edith’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

I was recently travelling in N.S. and learned from a fellow Acadia University alumni friend that Edith had passed away.

Edith and I were roommates for part of my time at Acadia. I was good friends with both Edith and Bill and attended their wedding. I visted Edith in her Amherst home and met her siblings and wonderful mom. She also travelled to my hometown in N.B. We did not keep in close touch after graduation.

However, In 2019, I tracked down Edith through her school and told her my husband and I were planning a trip to Winnipeg and wanted to meet up. I received a welcome invite. Unfortunately my plans changed and I did not get to Winnipeg.

I extend my sincerest sympathy to Edith's family, especailly Bill. What a love story!!

Edith's door was always open for lively conversation, problem solving and support. Her warmth, laughter and sharp mind made working with her a joy. Edith provided me with food for thought and encouragement through the years I worked with her. There is so much to cherish when I think of her but a delight that comes to mind is the support she gave when I selected new furniture for the classroom where I worked. It was a bold move: different coloured chairs, half-moon tables, individual desks and large rectangles. Differentiated seating and an array of groupings became possible, it was an amazing step forward!

Edith will be missed. My heart goes out to her family and friends, I can easily imagine the loss you are feeling.

I was lucky enough to work with Edith at Tec Voc. She was a joy to work with and very supportive of her colleagues. Edith was a very fun person to socialize with and I'll miss her funny stories. She was one of those rare beautiful people who only had good things said about her. My condolences to her family.

A message from Carole Chisholm, Nevads Valley...next door to Skye Glen , Cape Breton, where her father Henry was born. Edie Lou & I played together as children & sort of kept in touch while she was at Acadia & I was at Dalhousie. She was a delightful person to know. I am so sorry for her family's loss. Edith was a powerhouse and I deeply respected her. I enjoyed working with her at Tec Voc and appreciated her guidance and encouragement. She had high expectations and was consistent in both her words and actions. I remember when a large passenger vehicle clipped my parked vehicle in the lot. I went to the office to mention it, and Edith immediately became my personal agent. She pulled up the school camera footage, gave me all the information I needed, and peppered her opinions in the mix. She had me laughing and continued to check in until the situation was resolved. I remember her as a fierce advocate, a listening ear, a powerful woman. I was honoured that she had given me one of her bells which she was well-known for ringing on the school grounds rain or shine or snow in her famous purple coat. My deepest condolences to Edith's family and friends.

I met Edith at St. John's High School where she was the department head, a great colleague and with a great sense of humour. Loved the hilarious ways she talked about her family members, one incident being that she was driving behind an ambulance which was carrying her beloved husband who happened to have a stroke and she didn't have the least idea that she was driving behind the ambulance until later that day. Her husband and the kids were the pride and joy of her life and she cherished every moment with them. A great administrator who knew how to work with team effort, the concerns and interests of team members. I am devastated with her demise and only wish I had kept in touch with her after she left St. John's High School.

My deepest condolences especially to Alexandrea, Sarah, Athen and children.

I loved reading the entries of her colleagues as they confirmed what I imagined could only be her great contribution to Winnipeg's schools and their students. I knew Edith and her family as neighbours and as my sister's best friend. Edith always made me feel welcome, including with a glass of wine! Cheers, Edith, to a life well lived. RiP,

Edith was a warm, witty woman, both as colleague and friend. She had newly arrived in Winnipeg from the Maritimes when I met her, and luckily for us, she found her teaching position at Churchill High. What a striking, spunky person, with that amazing white hair surrounding her oh-so-youthful face.. I still hear her laugh, I stilsee her smile. My condolences to all who loved her.

Bill and family my deepest condolences,. I was fortunate to meet Edith when she came to ERHS as our new VP. She embodied all the qualities of a great leader,. She really rocked her white hair. which briefly was pink when the students reached their fundraising goal. When I think of her, I see her standing magestically in her purple coat and laughing. Gone too soon.

Edith was a wonderful, caring person and a wise administrator. She was quick to admit that she didn't have all the answers, and was willing to let others help her to find them. Even after she left SP, she reached out to help my son with an interview that eventually led him to a teaching job. I enjoyed popping in to KR and catching up with her. Her death is truly a great loss.

Edith was a wonderful VP at Tec Voc. I often dropped by for chats and guidance and she always gave me solid advice and support. She was great to work for and we both graduated from Western, so we lots to reminisce about. She will be deeply missed!

Edith was just the kind of VP teachers loved to work for, with her sound advice and steady presence; she was with us at Tec Voc for some challenging times (implementing the hat rule!). She was also the Admin at River Heights when my daughter attended, and was famous for clearing the snow hill in her beautiful purple coat! Edith, you made a difference.

Edith was the greatest principal to work for. She was welcoming, bold, kind, and quick as a whip. Edith encouraged me to be my best teaching self, and showed love and concern for every student she came in contact with.

I am honoured to have learned from Edith, laughed with her, and to have spent time with her outside of the workplace.

Deepest condolences to Edith's friends and family.

Sincerely,
