LORNE BACON

April 2, 1946 – May 9, 2025

With broken hearts and deep gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of Lorne Wayne Bacon on May 9, 2025, at the age of 79.

Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and raised in Edmonton and Winnipeg, Lorne was a loving husband, devoted father, proud grandfather, and a true friend to many. He lived a life full of love, laughter, and adventure.

Lorne was the beloved husband of Sandy, with whom he shared countless memories, travels, and a beautiful life. Together, they built a family that brought him immense pride and joy. He was a deeply loved father to Kelly (Craig), Brenley (Joel), Lindsay (JP), Brent (Alana), and Todd, and the adored Poppa to his precious Bacon Bits: Parker, Lucas, Mara, Beck, Sawyer, Lennon, Harlow, Perrie, and Kamp.

He will be missed by his brother Jim (Sharon), in-laws Chris (Will), Maurice as well as his nieces and nephews. Lorne was predeceased by his parents Margaret and Kenneth, his brother Neil, and his in-laws Shirley and Al Duffy. Their memories remained close to his heart throughout his life.

Triple 5 or to his friends, T5—a nickname born from one too many margaritas in Mexico and the discovery that all three of his names had five letters. He fully embraced the “everything is better with Bacon” lifestyle, from owning a collection of bacon-themed t-shirts, carrying a bacon wallet, sporting a Canadian Bacon tattoo, and happily answering to the nickname Porky.

Lorne loved to play games—Catan, Canasta, and Fast Track were frequent favorites with family and friends. Nothing brought him more joy than cruising with the top down in his Mustang convertible, with his “ILUVSUN” license plate. Always the athlete, his grandchildren will never forget watching him perform a handstand in the backyard—at 77 years old.

A man of adventure and curiosity, Lorne’s bucket list was extensive—and nearly entirely fulfilled. He held a koala in Australia, swam in the Great Barrier Reef, climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and even pleased Sandy by fleeing volcanic activity in Bali. He swam in waterfalls on the Road to Hana in Hawaii, belted out tunes at Hoop-Dee-Doo in Disney, rode a mechanical bull on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, wore a Santa suit on the beach in Mexico, and hit the slopes during spring break at Big White.

From Jimmy Buffett concerts in Vegas and pink jeep tours in Sedona, to tossing coins in the Trevi Fountain, cruising the Mediterranean and Caribbean, riding a donkey down the cliffs of Santorini, and ziplining North America’s longest zipline—he did it all. He visited the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, took in the rich colors of the East Coast in the fall, and captained the houseboat on Shuswap Lake. He lived it up during August Long weekends in Ingolf and savored every moment at the beloved Bacon Bunkhouse in Clear Lake.

Golfing was his passion—he played Pebble Beach and had the rare joy of golfing his age (except last summer) for over a decade! The only things left unchecked on his list were a hole-in-one and skydiving.

Lorne cherished 15 winters with his Coral Sands family in Apache Junction, Arizona, where he served as president of the activity club for four years and emceed the Canada Day celebrations with pride and humor.

While he loved to travel, Lorne also found deep joy in the everyday: his morning crossword in the hot tub, backyard golf swings, iPhone games, casino visits, and time spent with those he loved. He always felt so fortunate to be surrounded by the greatest of friends.

Lorne was deeply involved in his community, coaching both ringette and hockey, where he not only taught skills but brought smiles—often showing up to practices in shorts in the middle of winter, just to make the kids laugh.

Professionally, Lorne began as an electrician before discovering his passion in IT, earning his credentials at RRCC. He worked at Acklands, Mackie Data, and retired as IT Manager of Infrastructure at Manitoba Hydro.

Lorne was our hero. He was the guy you called when something broke, when you needed a laugh, or when you just wanted to hear one of his “punny” jokes. He was Mr. Fixit—and he leaves behind a trail of wisdom, wit, and warmth.

His strength over the past 13 months was nothing short of remarkable. From the moment of his diagnosis with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia in March 2024—never having taken a pill before that day—he vowed to live each day. And that he did. With grace, humor, and courage.

To all who supported our family during this journey, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your love was felt deeply—especially the unwavering friendship and care from Ross and Dori Rutherford, whose support meant more than words can express.

A heartfelt thanks to Dr. Brown and Sherese for the compassionate care they provided throughout Lorne’s AML journey.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that you donate a unit of blood if you are able or donate to CancerCare Manitoba or the Winnipeg Humane Society. Having received over 100 transfusions, blood donors were the unsung heroes of Lorne’s final year, and we will forever be grateful.

Whenever a beer is cracked open, we’ll hear Lorne’s voice saying, “Ahh, the best sound in the world.” And when a conversation hits an awkward moment, we’ll smile and say, “So… how about those Jets?”Because that’s what Lorne would have done.

We were so lucky to have him.

And saying goodbye will never be easy.

A celebration of life will be held at 1:30p.m. on Friday, June 6, 2025, at the Caboto Centre located at 1055 Wilkes Ave.

Lorne’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Sandy:

When I seen this, the good times of Hydro IT social life flashed through my mind. Lorne was such an integral part of it, that it made those days lifelong memories. And, now that I know Lorne was a Mustang fan, I'll think of him every time I drive mine.

Rest in peace Lorne.

We extend our deepest sympathies. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Nick and I want you to know we feel your loss so very much. Lorne was such a special friend. We enjoyed his visits to our deck all those winters in Arizona. He always had a smile on his face and made us feel better if we were troubled. Always there if we needed him. Hope your Jets make it to the final, Lorne.

With lots of love and hugs to you and your family Sandy.

Awesome tribute to a wonderful friend and family man whom we will miss dearly. We will always have fond Arizona memories of Lorney and his beautiful loving family. He was my brothers friend for years and I agree that Lorne & Sandy's Arizona oranges were the best ones in Coral Sands Mobile park. We had many laughs and fun times with him and his beautiful wife Sandy.

I seem to have posted just my name and my Mom's name twice. :( So sorry. Not sure what I did wrong. (Not tech savvy). I wanted to say on behalf of my Mother that my parents (Dick & Lorraine Cray from Iowa) used to have a wonderful time with the Bacon's at Coral Sands Park in Apache Junction, Arizona. Lots of fun memories. I am sure that my Dad and Lorne are cracking a beer open together in Heaven right now. You have our deepest sympathy. Hugs. From Carla and Lorraine Cray.

We will love and miss you forever Lorney.

Our most favourite trips, family dinners, and parties are the ones we spent with you! Thank you for always being the life of every party, our go-to guy for all things house related, the person who we all wanted to take a fireball shot with. I'll cherish all the memories, and the noise complaints in Maui, the wine bottle in the lake, the raft on Ingolf waters after a liquid lunch, the boys always trying to beat you in a round of golf, jumping in the pool before the heater went on. The best of times because of you.. 🩷

Lorne was truly one of a kind. One of my favourite memories of Lorne was when Bren and I flew down to Coral Sands for Spring Break. He picked us up from the airport in a giant old car and treated us to a week of bbq steak, aquacise in the pool and what we decided was the most “sporty” day of all time - watching spring training baseball and then driving straight to a Coyote’s game. When we left Mesa, I was already counting down the years until I could also get a place at Coral Sands. You are always guaranteed to have a good time if you are with the Bacons. Lorne’s sense of humour and full-of-life personality will be missed by many but will live on in his amazing kids. Sending lots of love.

Our hearts go out to you Sandy and Brenley and Kelley and your families. Such a wonderful tribute to a great guy and one of our favourite people. We had the pleasure of meeting Lorne when we worked together at Mackie Data and Bob and Lorne's relationship continued at Acklands Lorne became a very special friend to Bob - their friendship was no doubt nurtured by many business trips, one of which resulted in a great cup game in Toronto. I don't think we ever heard all of the stories from that memorable event. We are all better off for having known and loved Lorne and he will be missed by many.
