KYLE TODD BAKER

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved son, brother, and father KYLE TODD BAKER. Kyle passed peacefully with family by his side at the Health Sciences Center on Thursday December 7, 2023 due to complications with his Multiple Sclerosis.

Kyle was born on June 18th, 1973 to Debra Baker (mother) and Tom Baker (father) at the St. Boniface hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

He was a happy, imaginative, caring and adventurous kid with a smile as big as the Universe.

Also known as ‘Kylie Wylie’, Kyle spent his early years growing up in Point Douglas with grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins close by. This experience helped Kyle develop his love for family values.

The family moved to St. Vital in the mid 80’s where Kyle followed in his father’s footsteps and embraced his passion for Sea Cadets. Kyle joined Sea Cadets when he was in Jr. High and made it to the rank of ‘Petty Officer Second Class’ before withdrawing at the age of 18. He enjoyed his time very much with HMCS Chippawa as a member of ‘John Travers Cornwall’.

His favorite memory of his cadet years would have been his trip to Comox, BC where he trained and had his greatest experience of scaling the mast of a tall ship.

It was also during his time with the Sea Cadets that Kyle received his greatest honour of the very prestigious “Duke of Edinburgh” award.

Kyle spent many hours sailing on his boat that he received for his 18th birthday. Whether it was on the local ponds of the city or the open water at the lake, it always brought him peace and calmness.

After graduating High School from Dakota Collegiate in 1991, Kyle spent a year volunteering with Winnipeg Harvest before getting a job with Motor Coach Industries (MCI) where he would finish out the remainder of his working years. It was while working at MCI when Kyle met his wife and mother to his children Rebecca Ranson (Becky). Together they had 2 beautiful and wonderful children, Grace Baker (daughter) and James Baker (son).

Kyle also held a part time position with the Winnipeg Arena as a cook during home games for the Winnipeg Jets. He took much pride in this position because of his love for cooking and food. It also gave him the opportunity to further support his love of the game and his favorite team! Go Jets Go!

The love Kyle had for his children was clear in his eyes from the first moment he held both of them. His love grew for them more each day, unspoiled and unconditional. He was present at both births with great joy and beaming with pride as he could not wait to show them off! He was a very proud father.

Grace and James both shared a passion for dance and Kyle attended every concert and recital that he could, for as long as he could. They were his ‘tiny dancers’ and would often tear up while watching both of them up on stage. It was definitely a proud dad moment for him. James also attends acting classes at the MTYP, with Kyle in attendance at the year end show in spirit. Kyle is still their #1 fan and he loves both of his kids very much.

Kyle loved to read science fiction books and was a huge Star Trek and ‘original’ Star Wars trilogy fan and was often very vocal about it.

He is survived by his 2 children, Grace and James Baker, his mother Debby, his father Tom (Judy) and his sister Heather (Trevor) as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins. Kyle will be remembered for his courage, his wisdom, his huge heart and his “witty” sarcasm.

Thank you to all the Health care aides who looked after him in his home and his cook Shirley, who held a special place for him in her heart.

Thank you to the wonderful staff at the Health Sciences Centre on ward GD5 who helped take care of him, especially through his last few days, making him comfortable as possible.

Thank you to the staff at Ethical Death Care for their assistance and compassion for all of Kyle’s aftercare.

In lieu of flowers or cards, please consider a donation, in Kyle’s name, to the MS Society of Canada-Manitoba division. A memorial is planned for a later date.

Kyle, you are loved dearly and will be missed every day but you are no longer suffering and are at peace now, sailing away to a new life with an unlimited supply of perogies.
