DAVID WILLIAM BALAK

It is with extreme sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of David Balak, on March 1, 2020.

Beloved partner to Sandy and her daughters Rhonda (Matt) and Carri, as well as his step-grandchildren Charlie and Cooper. David was a cherished son to Marg; amazing and supportive brother to Sandie, Keith (Andrea) and Ashley (Adrian); uncle to niece Crystal and nephews Dustin, Logan and Lucas. David is pre-deceased by his father Al Balak.

David was born August 7, 1961 in Port Arthur, Ontario (now called Thunder Bay). David was 6lbs 8oz with a full head of dark hair. When he was 6 days old, he took his first trip and moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba where he lived and attended school. David was a quiet child and loved helping his mother. While attending school David took his first job as a busboy for Old Bayleys.

David moved to Nipawin, Saskatchewan when he was a teen and completed High School there. When David was old enough, he moved to Lethbridge, Alberta with his school friend (living off mac & cheese). He worked as a truck driver while attending technical school and later began his career with the Alberta Government as a surveyor so he could be outside and close to nature.

David subsequently moved back to Winnipeg when he was in his 30’s and worked for Pollock and Wright until his passing. David loved his job and took great pride in his work. He enjoyed his coworkers and always did his best to keep his crew happy.

One of David’s life-long dreams was to visit Australia, especially Harvey Bay where he spent many winters fishing. David’s passions were cheering on the Edmonton Eskimos, UFC, shooting pool (there were few that could beat him), cooking and creating new recipes. He was meticulous with reno’s and any other type of construction and landscaping his yard. David’s yard was a masterpiece, where many nights were spent around a roaring fire with his beloved dog Draik, music and the love of his life Sandy by his side. Other passions included his 1200 Honda - on which he explored western Canada, and Sky Diving.

David was extremely competitive, especially with his sister Ashley, when it came down to who had the biggest, fastest growing peas (David was always the victor). David’s nickname was MacGyver because if there was something that didn’t work - he found a way to fix it. David was the kind of man that looked out for everyone, and ensured they were taken care of. He will be deeply, sadly missed by all who knew him.

A celebration of David’s life will take place 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 14, 2020 at Canad Inns Destination Centre Fort Garry, 1824 Pembina Highway.
