INGE BARRETT

On Christmas morning, Inge left us to be with her devoted husband, Eddie, and beautiful daughter, Anne, in heaven. She courageously battled cancer and other challenging illnesses for years; and did so with grace and dignity. Also, waiting to welcome her was her twin sister, Marianne, her parents August and Magdalene, and older sister Erna. What a joyful reunion it must have been!

Inge is survived by her daughter Susan (Deb); two sons Edward (Colleen) and David (Sue); her seven grandchildren Stephanie, Craig, Caroline, Sarah, Jonathan, Daniel and Elizabeth, their partners; as well as 12 great-grandchildren.

Inge was born on April 2, 1930, in Oldenburg, Germany. This is where she lived and met the love of her life, Eddie, in 1946. Eddie was serving in the Army at that time. Their long-distance courtship continued until Inge joined Eddie in England where they were married on October 17, 1951.

Eddie continued to be stationed in various cities throughout Europe. While in Glasgow, Scotland, their two sons were born. Later, their daughter Anne was born in Klagenfurt, Austria. Their youngest daughter, Susan, was born in Oxford, England.

The couple settled in Eddie’s hometown of Manchester, England, where they raised their four children. From then on, annual family vacations were spent in Oldenburg, Germany, where they could all spend time with Inge’s parents and family.

As adults, three of the four children moved to Canada. In 1981, Inge and Eddie moved to Canada to be closer with their children and grandchildren. Soon thereafter, Inge joined her daughter, Anne, in working at Extendicare Sunset in Regina, Saskatchewan. She worked there for 12 years and it was at Extendicare that she met Judy Boemer. They became life-long friends and shared many good times together. Inge was a hard worker and retired at the age of 65.

After a year of retirement, Inge and Eddie moved to Winnipeg to be with their youngest daughter, Susan. After which they moved back to Manchester to be with their son David, grandchild Elizabeth, and other family members.

In 2002, Eddie passed away suddenly. Inge remained in England until 2007. Helping her during those five years, besides David and Elizabeth, was another life long friend, Marie Lomas. Inge made supper and together they spent nearly every weekday evening together.

Susan was finally successful at persuading Inge to come back to Canada. So back to Canada she came at the age of 77!

Her biggest love was spending time with family, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She spent many hours cooking, baking and knitting for them. No one was without a sweater, mitts, or a toque, something to keep them warm in Canada’s cold winter months. Even some of the pets and Barbie dolls received a hand-made treat from Inge. Each and every item was made with love and determination to make it the best!

Inge loved living with the family pets. Some of them, including her dear Katie and Rosie, kept her company since April 2017.

Inge was warm, generous, funny, hardworking and incredibly strong. She was a straight-talker, incredibly selfless and sensitive. She filled our hearts with love and will be missed more than mere words can say.

Mum, to the world you might have been one person, but to us, your family, you were the world.

We will love you and miss you forever more.
