ROAN JOHN (“RJ”) BARRION

August 19, 1972 – May 11, 2026

With great heartache, we share the passing of Roan John Barrion (affectionately known as “RJ” to his family) on May 11, 2026.

Roan had a passion for finding beauty in both the small and big moments in life. He perceived the world with a unique depth and colour, and through his creative endeavours, left us with beautiful glimpses of the meaning he found everywhere.

Born in Winnipeg to Filipino immigrant parents, Roan was the eldest of the second generation within his large extended family. From a young age, he was known for his deep curiosity, creativity, and quiet kindness. While his sisters took formal music lessons, Roan chose his own path and taught himself to play the family piano and guitar, mastering them by ear—a gift of natural talent that stayed with him throughout his life and which he applied across numerous disciplines. Growing up, his passion for music, BMX, and skateboarding inspired his sisters and cousins alike. Roan graduated from Garden City High School in 1990 and from The University of Winnipeg in 1994.

His devotion to skateboarding and the skate community became the foundation for Green Apple, where he produced original skateboard films featuring himself and his friends. A pioneer and visionary in the local skate scene, Roan applied a distinct personal style to his cinematography and editing. He was widely known for his taste in music, seamlessly compiling soundtracks that blended rap with jazz standards. Before retiring his camera, Roan was awarded Best Director by the National Screen Institute for his film Rod and Mike’s Street Magic.

Roan worked in a variety of fields, including roles at Club Monaco, Palliser, EQ3, and MDA. He channeled his sharp eye for aesthetics into his own antique and art business, Modern Love Design, as well as modern furniture design under Roan Barrion Design, and original contemporary art under Pivli Archive. His celebrated work was featured in publications like Architectural Digest and InStyle, and was showcased in exhibitions across Canada and in Paris, France. Clients, colleagues, and friends relied heavily on his insights and trusted his judgment. Roan’s vast knowledge of art, design, architecture, photography, and music was something he shared generously, inspiring those who shared in his passions.

Roan touched many lives in many ways. Through school, skateboarding, biking, jobs, antiques, art, and design, Roan made lifelong friendships in all facets of his life. His warmth, creativity, and presence meant so very much to those who knew him. In spite of his achievements and the love and appreciation he had from both lifelong friends, and friends he hadn't even met in person, he remained unwaveringly humble and kind.

Above all his achievements, Roan’s’ greatest creation was his daughter, Maisie. She was the absolute centre of his world, and there was no greater love than the love he held for her.

Diagnosed with advanced gastric cancer in 2024, Roan remained resilient and grateful throughout a series of challenging treatments. His family, close loved ones, and especially his daughter Maisie, were given the gift of extended time with him.

Roan leaves behind his beloved daughter, Maisie; his former wife, dearest friend, and dedicated caregiver, Erin; his mother and dedicated caregiver, Zenaida; his sisters, Pam (Kevin) and Elke (Kris); and his nieces, Brynnen, Rylan, Maya, and Stella. Roan was predeceased by his father, Dionisio (John) Barrion.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Rachel C. and Erin M. for their unwavering care and support. We also deeply appreciate the staff at CancerCare at Victoria Hospital, Dr. Goldenberg, the Community Palliative Care team, and the staff at the St. Boniface Palliative Care Unit.

Roan will be deeply

and greatly missed by us all.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at Pineridge Hollow, 67086 Heatherdale Rd 25E, West Pine Ridge, on Sunday, June 7, from 1:30 to 5:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, or to the family to be placed toward an education fund for his daughter, Maisie.
