Mike Bartmanovich
MICHAEL "MIKE" JOHN BARTMANOVICH
January 6, 1959 – July 30, 2024
It is with profound sadness and broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Mike Bartmanovich.
Mike will be dearly missed by his loving wife Carol; his children, Jason (Katherine) and Laura; his beautiful grandchildren, Max, Gavin and Cassidy; also, his extended family: mother Jan; Dan & Faith; Sharon, Brenda, Sasha and Hudson; mother-in-law Lydia, Deb & Jim; Bill & Darlene; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Mike will be lovingly remembered as well by his many friends, neighbours and fellow community members of Victoria Beach. Mike was pre-deceased by his dad, Bernie.
Mike was the second born son to Bernie and Jan Bartmanovich. Mike grew up in Fort Garry and from an early age was active in hockey, Junior Achievement, high school musicals and St. Vital Parish youth group.
Mike met the love of his life, Carol, and they were married on November 10, 1979. A few years later, they welcomed Jason and Laura. The family spent their early years in Transcona before a year-long adventure in Daytona Beach, Florida, then returned to Canada and Transcona for a few more years. Life was busy with Jason and Laura’s activities, community clubs and school activities. Mike was always coaching or volunteering with his kids. He loved his time at the family cottage at Sandy Bay in the RM of Victoria Beach, where the family spent many summers fishing, golfing, swimming and just hanging out with the Barts at ‘the lake’. Mike and Carol made the decision to build their retirement home in Victoria Beach and just completed their 10th year in their place of Peace.
Mike’s outgoing personality and quick wit endeared to him to everyone he met. Mike’s vast knowledge of trivia, big words and obscure facts, and his natural competitive nature made him a serious contender in most games and a wonderful conversationalist. He was usually found with a crossword puzzle and pen in his lap. Recently, he posted his daily Wordles with associated par rating. Mike loved playing hockey as a goalie with the Barons and carried on to the old timer league, the 99ers; he eventually retired from hockey when his knees refused to cooperate. Mike loved golfing when ever he had the chance. For several years, Mike and a group of buddies, including Bernie, Jason and Dan, made the annual golf trip south of the border, where he witnessed Bernie getting a hole in one - or so the story goes.
Mike loved fishing with his dad Bernie and family and friends - especially along the Maskwa River - and, being Bernie’s son, there were always plenty of fishing stories. Mike and Jason enjoyed the annual Bart Boys fishing weekends – winter and summer – and had the privilege of winning the Sh*thead award a few times.
Mike enjoyed his careers in the information technology sector as well as years of teaching continuing education at Red River Community College (Red River Polytech) and University of Winnipeg. As retirement arrived, Mike found himself becoming the local go-to guy for handyman tasks and information technology. He entered local politics and was elected Councillor in the RM of Victoria Beach, serving a 4-year term. Mike was honoured to work with the Victoria Beach Police Board the past several years.
Mike knew everyone and everyone knew Mike.
The last several years Mike loved spending time with Laura and our beautiful grandchildren Max and Gavin. Grandpa was hands on and shared his love of singing with them from Beach Boys to nursery rhymes.
Mike thoroughly loved being part of the Victoria Beach community: from calling Bingo at the Social Scene to selling 50-50 at the Country Market with Carol to enjoying baseball again, helping Merry Makers annual Rummage Sale and Flea market and volunteering at Beaches Community Centre
The family would like to thank Sasha, paramedics, and local police officers, who assisted Mike and his family during this difficult time.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00pm on September 7, 2024, at the Beaches (formerly Victoria Beach) Community Centre. Highway 59 North at Ateah Rd. We are hoping to hold the celebration outside, weather permitting, however an indoor location is available at the same location if raining. Bring a lawn chair just in case.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mike's memory to Ronald McDonald House Canada or KidSport - both of which held special meaning for him.
Mike’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.
Our Song
Walk hand in hand with me through all eternity
Have faith, believe in me, give me your hand
Love is a symphony of perfect harmony
When lovers such as we walk hand in hand
Be not afraid, for I am with you all the while
So lift your head up high and look toward the sky
Walk hand in hand with me…..
