Diane Bates

DIANE BATES
October 20, 1940 – January 27, 2026
With deep love and profound sadness, the family of Diane Bates announces her peaceful passing on January 27, 2026, at the St. Boniface Hospital. Diane was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend whose warmth, kindness, and unwavering love shaped the lives of all who knew her.
Born in Winnipeg to her parents, Mary and George Hossack, who predeceased her, Diane grew up surrounded by family connections that would remain important to her throughout her life. From an early age she developed a love for animals, a passion that followed her through every chapter. Over the years she welcomed many beloved pets into her home, each one cherished deeply—most recently her loyal dog Layka, who brought her immeasurable joy and companionship.
Diane married the love of her life, Fred Bates, beginning a partnership that spanned an extraordinary 67 years. Together they built a family rooted in love, hard work, and devotion. Their life’s journey brought them to Gillam, Manitoba, where they spent ten memorable years while Fred worked. Those northern years forged lasting friendships and family memories before Diane and Fred returned to Winnipeg, settling in St. Vital, the community that became their long term home.
A devoted mother, Diane leaves behind her loving children: Cheryl, Tracey (Jim), and Craig (Deb). She was deeply proud of each of them and the families they raised. Diane was blessed with a beautiful and lively group of grandchildren—Jennifer, Justin (Cassie), Dylan (Amber), Quinn (Kaylee), and Devon—who adored their grandmother and will forever carry the lessons and love she shared with them. Her joy only deepened as her family grew to include great grandchildren: Tealiah, Luxton, Bella, Kiera, Maci, Kane, Haven, Cater, Parker, and Archer, each one holding a special place in her heart.
Diane worked for many years in housekeeping at the St. Amant Centre, where her strong work ethic, compassion, and gentle nature were appreciated by colleagues and residents alike. She was someone who found meaning in caring for others, whether at home or in her workplace.
Family meant everything to Diane. Her home was a gathering place—warm, welcoming, and filled with the aroma of home cooked meals, laughter, and the comforting hum of togetherness. She hosted countless celebrations, holidays, and impromptu get togethers, creating memories that her family will treasure forever. No matter how busy life became, Diane ensured that everyone had a seat at her table and a place in her heart.
In her younger years, Diane enjoyed many road trips, traveling with family across Alberta, British Columbia, Atikokan, Ontario and a special trip to Oklahoma with Fred. These trips were full of adventure and excitement, capturing her love of exploration and her desire to experience life alongside the people she loved most.
One of Diane’s favorite pastimes was enjoying bingo—a tradition she shared with her mother, her daughters, and even her great granddaughter. These outings became cherished multigenerational moments filled with laughter, stories, and the simple happiness of being together.
Diane’s life was defined by love: her love for her family, her pets, her community, and the simple joys that filled her days. She was gentle, thoughtful, and selfless, with a presence that made everyone feel cared for and welcomed. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of the family she nurtured, the friendships she held dear, and the countless memories she helped create.
She will be remembered always—
deeply missed, yet forever cherished.
We would like to express our deep gratitude to the compassionate staff of Actionmarguerite St. Joseph Personal Care Home for the exceptional care they provided to Diane. The staff often told us how much they adored her gentle spirit and how truly sweet she was. Their kindness, dedication, and the warmth they showed her will always be remembered.

- My sincerest condolences to Fred and your beloved family. Diane was part of our friendship five... Karen, Dee, Marion & myself. Our gatherings included our famous progressive dinner, birthday & Christmas parties and of course all those dances at the rec centre. I curled, played baseball and bowled with Diane. She put herself out there & was truly a very genuine soul. In sweet remembrances of Diane... Lovingly, Eliza
