PATRICIA MARGARET BATES

January 14, 1944 - September 11, 2022

Following a brief stay at the Grace Hospital, Patricia Margaret Bates passed away at the age of 78 years. Family were at her side during this difficult period.

She was predeceased by her parents William and Margaret. She is survived by her 3 children, Donald (Wendy), Scott, and Susan, her two brothers, Robert (Glenda) and William. Pat was a proud grandmother to Sara, Alyssa, Kyria and Kendra as well as three great grandchildren, Genaya, Bentley and Colt.

Pat was married early and at 22 years old, after her divorce, was a single mother with new twins (Scott and Susie) and an active 4-year-old son Don.

Pat started working at Perth Whitehall dry cleaners in payroll dept where she worked for 15 years. She started at Red River Community Centre as a casual cashier in the cafeteria and moved to a position in the Continuing Education department. She worked there for 20 years and made many long-lasting friendships with her co-workers.

She left to focus her attention on Pat’s Pantry where she made fresh canned locally sourced pickled preserves. People may remember buying her delicious pickles, jams and jellies from her at various locations and markets around Winnipeg. Pat finally settled her business at the St Norbert Farmers Market. She had a table loaded with her preserves for sale and later transitioned to the marketing director for the St Norbert Farmers market for close to a decade. During this time the market grew immensely in size and success.

At this time her best friend Anne Peckham and Anne’s husband Bill founded the Eagles Wings Ministry located in Africa but based in Winnipeg.  Pat left the market to volunteer and later worked as the account manager for Eagles Wings, a position she very much enjoyed.

Pat started telemarketing lottery tickets for the Canadian Cancer Society where she worked several years right up to 2020 when Covid-19 hit the world. She was very successful and developed a great phone relationship with many of her customers.

Pat loved to travel and visited many countries in Europe, Vegas, Reno and Mexico. When the children were young they spent many happy times camping and fishing throughout Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario.

She was an avid reader and always had a book on the go. She became a huge Blue Bomber and Winnipeg Jets fan and watched their games faithfully. She loved to play bingo and take day trips out to South Beach Casino. In the last couple of years Pat enjoyed many hours spending time and building puzzles with her son Scott.

Pat was very generous and loved her family immensely and always enjoyed family gatherings and holidays. Her home was adorned with pictures of her children and grandchildren. She was a great cook and enjoyed sharing her delicious canning with those of us lucky enough to be available for the gifting.

Special thanks to the staff at the Grace Hospital for care during her relatively brief but difficult time.

A celebration of Pat's life will be held at 2pm on Friday, September 30 at 603 Wellington Crescent at Academy Road (Unitarian Church).

Hadn't seen this page until today, Pat mother of my longest known and best pal Donnie. Pat recommended me for a job in ConEd as an electronic instuctor in the late 80's. Glad to have known her and saddened by the loss.

Pat and I worked together in continuing education and became good friends outside of work. She was always there to have fun together, work hard together and share her experience, personal and professional with me. I valued our friendship. Her health issues and Covid kept us apart the last few years but she was always in my thoughts and prayers and I will miss her!  My condolences go out to her family,I know how much they meant to her.

For a little while, I worked behind Pat and across from Debbie Baxter in Continuing Education. Those were days of laughing a lot, a whole lot of work and a whole lot of laughing. She was a hard working lady with a great sense of humor. She will be missed.

I loved her laughter.  Pat showed me the ropes at RRC Continuing Education.  I was a deer in the headlights when I started there in June of 1988.  With her vast experience and with her humor, I was able to gain some footing as the Office Manager.  It was a learning experience for both of us, especially when it was suggested that we take the first day of registration for CE downstairs in the halls of the college.  We knew that we were expecting hundreds of students. She stayed late into the evening to help us make the process easier for our students.  I have many memories of all of us climbing up ladders hanging huge sheets of paper explaining changes in courses and other directions.  And then, sometimes we would all go for a beer together to acknowledge our hard work.  Occasionally those nights turned into early mornings and then we would have to be front and center at the college at 7:00 AM.  Pat would work the weekends with all of us to input the registrations from that first day of registration.  She helped me learn the Olivetti typewriter!  She kidded me and laughed when I constantly misspelled Manitoba!  She had great and long-lasting relationships with our instructors.  They would often only go to her.  Because she had all the answers to their questions.  She was a perfectionist at work and took pride in what she did for the college.  I will miss this wonderful woman.   Betty McInerney
