HELEN MARGARET BENNIE

(née CUNNINGHAM)

October 6, 1939 – December 18, 2024

BENNIE, Helen Margaret née Cunningham slept her way to heaven peacefully at home with her family on December 18, 2024 in her 85th year. 


She was the daughter to the late Douglas Cunningham & Margaret (MacKay) (Cunningham) DuFrense from Tatamagouche, NS. She later moved to Hamilton, ON where she met the love of her life James Bennie, and resided for over 60 years, enjoying dancing and bridge. 


Dear mother to Deborah (John) Winnipeg; & Sandra (Mark) N. Battleford. Proud grandmother to nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers, John (Gloria), Halifax; Andrew (Heather), Gulf Shore; sister, Hazel McKay, Tatamagouche; half-brother, Douglas Cunningham, Tatamagouche; step-sister, Dorothy “Dot” Bell, Truro; sister-in-law, Eden (Cunningham) Langille, Tatamagouche; & several nieces & nephews. 


She was predeceased by her husband; brothers, Donald & Robert; & Step-mother, Dorothy (Trenholm). 


Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Helen will take place this summer in Tatamagouche.


Helen’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Helen and I were classmates from the beginning in elementary school through to high school in Tatamagouche. Sorry to learn of her passing.

Helen and my mother, Dot Bell, became stepsisters when they were both 14. They went to school together and played the same sports. I always loved when they got together on summer holidays. There were always stories and lots of laughing.

wh en h elen was young child , she alwasy love d to climb trees, She was a great cook, i always enjoyed my visits to hamilton and her visits to tatamagouche, S he was lots of fun
