PATRICIA ANNE BENOIT

August 22, 1952 - September 27, 2022

Patricia Anne Benoit, age 70, of Winnipeg, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2022 at St. Boniface Hospital with family by her side.

The oldest of six girls, Pat was born in Winnipeg on August 22, 1952 to Alan and Betty (née Mackie) Masson. A 1970 graduate of Glenlawn Collegiate, she went on to become a legal secretary. Shortly after, she met the love of her life, Bruce Benoit, at a community dance. Pat and Bruce were married on July 26th, 1974 and in 1978 had their first-born child, Leah. Three years later, they had their second child, Kristy, and their family was complete.

Pat was faced with numerous challenges in her life, but never let them hold her down for long. Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at the age of 31 and widowed at the age of 43 when Bruce tragically passed to cancer, she managed to overcome every obstacle life threw at her. Not only did she manage to raise two teenage girls as a single mother with a debilitating disease, she did so with grace, laughter, and dignity. She was an exceptionally social person with a ready smile for everyone she met. Her daughters lovingly referred to her house as a zoo because of the constant buzz of phones and doorbells ringing and visitors stopping by. The fact that she remained close friends with people she met at every stage of her life is a testament to her kind, fun, and loving personality. People were drawn to her because of her sunshine, positive demeanor, and zest for life. She loved to travel and did so extensively with various friends and family members. She found joy in seeing new things, exploring new places, and was never one to turn down any adventure, no matter how big or how small.

Pat’s greatest pride was her family. She loved nothing more than to spend time with her daughters, their husbands, and her grandchildren. She had an extra sparkle in her bright blue eyes anytime she was around Shea, Payton, Charlie, or Audrey. It didn’t matter if she was watching their many sporting events, going to movies or the theater, sitting around playing board games or cards, or simply chatting on FaceTime, she was content to be involved. She had a hand in creating so many special memories for her family and was loved beyond measure by each of them. She will be missed more than words could ever express.

Pat leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and resilience that will be carried on by those who were lucky enough to know her. She leaves to mourn her passing her two daughters, Leah Benoit (Matt Rollason) and Kristy (John) Fitzgerald; four grandchildren, Shea and Payton Rollason and Charlie and Audrey Fitzgerald; five sisters Gaylene (Bob) Brett, Shannon (Chris) Peake, Shelley Masson (Charlie Brown), Laurel (Leonard) Sidon, and Alison Masson (Joe Lasko); and many nieces, nephews, brothers- and sister-in-laws, and countless friends.  She was predeceased by her loving husband, Bruce Benoit, and her parents, Alan and Betty Masson.

A celebration of life will take place at 603 Wellington Crescent in Winnipeg at 2 pm on Monday, October 24th, 2022. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Manitoba Possible.

Patricia's family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

My sincere condolences to Pat’s family. Pat and I met when we attended Red River College together and although the miles eventually separated us, we tried to get together when we could and I certainly thought of her often. She was such a lovely lady and I know she will be missed by so many people whose lives she touched.  Donna Ptolemy (Robson)

My deepest condolences to everyone in the Benoit family from a friend of Pat’s. I mainly knew Pat through the Winnipeg MS Community.  Although I’m also connected to Pat through my cousin Charley Brown, being married to Pat’s sister, Shelly.   Pat came out to most events held by the MS Society and Pat and I were in some of the same study and support groups over the years and Pat was always a positive voice in the groups and was inclusive and welcoming to everyone.  She will be missed by everyone who knew her. Sincerely, Sandy Popham

My deepest condolences to the Benoit family. I knew Bruce and Pat for many years. We were very good friends way back in the 70's Then life took us in different directions and we lost touch. In my heart we were still great friends. RIP Pat, Bruce is waiting for you.

Pat was a beautiful person. She was kind, generous and fun loving. My favourite memory of time spent with Pat was sitting in our apartment in France chatting as we played rummy and sipped wine. She will be missed by all who were privileged to know her.

Pat and I said our Goodbyes in August , as I was leaving for a trip overseas and she would have left Knights Villa for her new home in Assisted living before I returned . I have only learnt of her death and am deeply saddened. She was a most courageous and gracious woman and I will miss her ready smile . Peace be with you Pat. Eileen

Pat was truly an example of strength and grace. Despite being diagnosed with MS at such a young age, she soldiered on and lived life to the fullest.. She raised two exceptional daughters, of which she had every right to be proud.  I never once heard Pat complain about her health issues and she always greeted everyone with a smile and a kind word. She was an inspiration to all who knew her,and will be sorrowfully missed, but never forgotten.

I met Pat when her daughters started doing gymnastics at Aerials in the mid eighties.  She and Bruce were so incredibly supportive of their girls and of the club.  The way she soldiered on despite her illness was inspiring.  I have very fond memories of my time with the Benoit family. Please accept my deepest condolences.  Your mother was a lovely person.  I will keep your family in my prayers.

Pat and I became friends in 1967 when we were in the same class at Glenlawn and were on the cheerleading squad together. We continued seeing each other at the Glenlawn Girls get togethers. She will be missed.

Will always remember Christmas Eves at Pat and Bruce’s place on Ashworth.  Will also remember that Pat was instrumental in me getting my drivers licence 1 week before my 30th birthday.  I was diagnosed with MS in my late 20s. Pat was an inspirational roll model.  Hard to believe this really happened. ❤

❤ I first met Pat Christmas Eve. We played Cranium and laughed and laughed. Pat was so welcoming and it was easy to see where her daughters got their wonderful personalities from. I am in England presently and will not be able to attend. I’m so sorry for your loss. Take good care of each other. ❤
