ELSIE MARION BERARD

Our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother Elsie Marion Berard (née Johnson), age 89, left us peacefully on June 20, 2022.

Elsie was predeceased by her husband, the love of her life, Daniel Albert Berard, her parents, Bella Daniels and Herman Johnson, and siblings Edna Walker, Harold, Norman and William Johnson.

She is survived by her children, Francis Daniel Berard (Janice Berard) and Georgia McMillan (Douglas McMillan); grandchildren Jennifer Berard (Taylor Cameron), Nicholas Berard, Matthew Berard, Eric McMillan (Kim McMillan), and Daniel McMillan; great grandchildren Ryleigh McMillan, Kieran McMillan, Cohen McMillan, Carter McMillan, and Harris McMillan, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Elsie, was born in Winnipeg, MB.  She was orphaned at the age of 10. Elsie grew up in foster care in Kirkfield Park, Winnipeg. She joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1951 as an airwoman.  She later met Daniel Berard and they married on September 7, 1957.

She worked for Orchid Florists for some years and then National Insurance Adjusters before joining Manitoba Public Insurance in 1971. She retired from Manitoba Public Insurance on June 30, 1989.

Elsie was a compassionate, strong, and tenacious woman. She loved spending time with her children and family and was often seen tending to her beautiful garden – the most beautiful garden in Windsor Park! We are heartbroken by Elsie’s passing.

The Family would like to thank the staff at Devonshire House and Charleswood Care Centre for their heartfelt care in Elsie’s final years.

A funeral mass for Elsie will be held on Friday, July 8, 2022, at 11:00 a.m., at The Parish of St. Bernadette, 820 Cottonwood Road, Winnipeg MB R2J 1G1.

Elsie was modest and unpretentious – in lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to Diabetes Canada.

Elsie's family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

I have fond memories of Hattie as a young girl. She brought magic into Christmas with beautifully wrapped gifts, delicious looking cakes and of course the gingerbread men. I can't forget about the nuts and bolts.i have a special place in my heart for all the wonderful memories. ❤️  Lorraine Walker Norman.

Sorry to read of Elsie's death. I have many pleasant memories of her. I also recall the many breakfasts we had together at Perkins in Southdale, where we would catch up on things. These were always accompanied by lots of laughter as well as shared experiences. She will be missed.

I am very sorry to hear of the pasing of Elsie.  I had the pleasure of working with Elsie for a short period of time at the St. Mary's Road Claims Centre in the 70s and again for an equally short time in the 80s.  My condolences to the Berard and McMillan families and the extended families.
