FAY MARION BERARD

July 8, 1933 - September 2, 2022

Our dear mom, Fay, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2022 at the age of 89.

She is survived by her children Michele (Glen), Renee (Greg) and Kyla; grandson Kyle; sister Anne and sister-in-law Ruth. Predeceased by parents Harry Sr and Jane; husband Rick; brothers and sisters Bill, Harry Jr, Charlotte, Jim, Kathy, and Tom.

Fay, the youngest of eight children, was born on July 8, 1933 in Novra, Manitoba and was raised in a log home. Mom tells stories of having to melt snow on the wood stove to have a bath in the winter. Being the youngest, she was lucky to be first to bathe with clean water. Fay’s mother died when she was 2 and her dad was gone most of the time working on the railroad so her sister Kathy raised her along with the rest of the kids at home. Fay thought of Kathy as her mother and was forever grateful for the love that she was shown.

In 1950, at the young age of 17, Fay and her sister Anne moved to the big city of Winnipeg. Mom got a job with the Canadian Grain Commission for $100.00 a month.

In her early 20’s she met and married our dad, Richard (Rick). They move into a new home in Transcona on McMeans Ave. where they raised three girls, Michele (Peanuts), Renee (Popcorn) and Kyla (Cracker Jack/Angel). Fay and Rick rented a cabin at Grand Beach every summer. Mom would stay and dad would commute back and forth for work. After Kyla was born, we rented a cabin at Bemidji, MN until dad passed away. We also enjoyed travelling with Mom and Dad to Disneyland, Las Vegas, Disneyworld and Texas.

Mom got to travel to Portugal and Florida with her good friend, Dorothy. She also spent a month in Treasure Island with her long-time friends, Carol and Joanne. Her travels also included vacations to Mexico and Hawaii with her family.

She was a total social butterfly! Fay loved her Friday night card group. She was very active, loved to golf, curl and Belgian bowl. She also loved to go to the Transcona Senior Centre for lunch on Tuesdays and enjoyed line dancing, pool and darts. Mom was a loyal Blue Bomber and Jets fan. Game day would involve wearing the appropriate team’s jersey and rarely would she miss viewing the games on tv. Fay loved the Kyle Family Reunions and the McMeans Ave block parties. She was always having friends over for an awesome meal with of course, homemade dessert. She always had a small gift for every guest to take home. Fay was very generous and enjoyed making others feel special.

She liked to dress up for Halloween (or any other opportunity to put on a costume). Her clothing always suited the occasion, and if necessary, she would not hesitate to do a little shopping to supplement her wardrobe. She was always good for changing two or three times during an event. If you know Fay, you know what we are talking about.

One of the best days of her life was when Kyle, her grandson was born. Now she didn’t just have to show pictures of her granddogs. Kyle, her grandson, had a very special place in Fay’s heart. Their relationship, and the love they shared for each other, will last forever and always.

Earlier this summer, Mom wrote a story called the Pampered Kitten.

Mom was a strong, fun-loving, positive person who will be missed by her family and many friends.

A special thanks to everyone who came to visit her recently, she was very grateful that you came to see her. Thanks to the palliative care team and her nurse, Richard. Special thanks to Christian, her pharmacist, from Plessis Pharmacy. He always asked about mom and would come up and visit her.

Thank you, mom, for you have left us with a lifetime of wonderful memories that we will cherish forever. We will love you and miss you. Happy Trails to You.

Mom was proud of her Irish heritage. She would raise her glass and toast her guests with:

“May the wind be at your back when you sail the Seven Seas and may it always be the other guy who says this drink is on me”

A celebration of her life will be held 1:00 p.m. Sunday, September 11 at the Transcona Legion at 117 Regent Ave East, Winnipeg, MB.

Fay's family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

Writing a tribute to Fay should be easy! However there are not enough positive words to truly describe her. ...fun, happy, thoughtful, fun, caring, considerate, creative, fun, energetic, grateful, gracious, courageous, strong, fun, and all of us that have known her have experienced her glowing personality! The memories we have will always be an inspiration to us! She had more energy than anyone we know!!  She helped us host backyard parties and everyone just loved her and talked about her graciousness and hospitality!  Our curling adventures/bonspiel and golfing expedients can fill a novel. Such very good memories... Fay will lovingly live in our hearts forever! RIP our dear friend. Our sincere sympathy to Michele, Glen, Renee, Gleg, Kyla, Kyle and all of the family. ❤ Reg and Donna

What a beautiful tribute to a truly amazing lady.I met Fay through curling in Transcona some 60 years ago.She was such a fun loving person to be around always smiling and having fun.She never complained about her illness.Last time I talked to her she was preparing a meal. She said the home are wanted to cook for her but she said I am quite capable of cooking for myself Thank you. That fiesta spirit and her beautiful smile I will never forget. We had so many good times together putting on skits for curling banquets. When a group-of the girls came out to Lee River for the weekend Blueberry picking.Playing games Fay was always the life of the party.I will miss our phone chats. My deepest condolences to all Fay’s family that she was so proud of.Death leaves a heartache no one can heal but Love leaves memories no one can steal.and To live in the hearts of those you leave behind is to never die and Fay will live on in all our hearts forever. She has earned her wings and now RIP dear friend

Growing up in the 60's on the 100 block of McMeans Ave. West was a dream for my family and others. Perhaps the greatest street of alltime?  A huge part of that was auntie Fay. Auntie Fay was a key part in this close knit block, she was heavily involved in our famous block party and was always in the center of McMeans festivities. I know Fay was loved by all the Hoddinotts and the rest off the 100 block. Thank-you Auntie Fay for being a loving role model for myself and others. Geoff Hoddinott 🤗❤️

We were fortunate enough to know Fay through Joe’s mom, Dorothy, as they were such good friends for many years. We will always remember Fay as being so joyful and positive despite life’s challenges, truly an inspiration for us all on how to live.  Rest In Peace Fay, we will miss you very much❤

Fay will live on in our lives in all the beautiful memories she left us. Her girls were so faithful in keeping us up to date and one summer Michele even drove Anne & Fay here to Barrie, the car loaded with outfits for a mini-Fay day.  We loved every one of our get-togethers. I will miss my sister-in-law, Fay and cherish the cards she sent, adorned with her paintings of flowers.

Aunt Fay was such a bright spark in our lives. I remember my dad (her brother, Tom) saying "Fay never walks into a room - she dances in." He was so proud of his younger sisters, Anne and Fay. My deepest condolences to Anne, Michele, Renée, Kyla, Kyle and all of Fay's family and friends.

What a beautiful tribute. Fay was such a fun person to be around. She loved organizing parties, luncheons and dinners. Last year for Michele’s birthday she had a dinner party and we had a blast! Whose 88 year old Mom does that? Fay. We will never forget the time at Winnipeg Beach, sitting around the fire and she was telling us stories about her childhood which were very interesting.  Rest In Peace Fay. You were loved and will be missed very much. ♥️♥️ Mona & Bruce Talling

What a beautiful tribute to a spirited, strong & positive person. My memorable times with Fay were mainly at the cottage in Belair. Fay loved the lake & was always happy to spend time with me there. Our girls weekends were planned & coordinated by Fay. She arrived with a suitcase full of wardrobe changes & insisted we dress up for Sunday dinner which was usually a full coarse chicken dinner with all the trimmings!  Our evening card games of count your card stupid & 31 wound up the evenings with sips of wine. Rest In Peace dear Fay…you truly will be missed. Joanne❤

I was blessed to have known Fay for close to 50 years. As a young teen and to this day I was included in many of their family vacations as well as  holiday celebrations (every year a picture in front on the Xmas tree with a Santa hat on, was a must). Lol! The Berard's door was always open and Fay always had a way of making every occasion very special for everyone. A very positive and courageous woman who fought very hard to battle her illness never letting on how sick she really was. Fay always knew how to live life to the fullest. Derald and I will miss all the fun dinners, gatherings, card game nights where she taught us tons of fun poker games and let's not forget to mention the wardrobe changes. Lol! Fay will be dearly missed but we are blessed that we were able to make so many wonderful memories with her. ❤❤❤

What a wonderful tribute to an amazing, spirited, woman.   She was SO proud of her children as well as Kyle.   It  is clear that her fun,  “carpe diem” way of living has been passed on to those children.    What a treasure she has been in their lives and I know she will be sorely missed.   ❤

I always enjoyed my time with Fay. Our family reunions were always something special because of her. As our "social convener' at the reunions she had her Fay Day to lighten things up and keep us laughing. In reality though it was more like Fay Week. She had so much energy that she kept us entertained for the whole week. You will be missed Fay. My condolences to Michele, Renee, Kyla, and Kyle.

I will always have such fond memories of being a kid at my Gramma Dorothy's house and staying over on the crib nights Gramma hosted- whatever the weather outside, Gramma's dining room was always bright and warm and cheery. Her and Fay (usually Gail and Louis also) would be sitting around that big old oak table under the picture windows, foamy glasses of Stella in hand, ready to enjoy an evening of cribbage and good company. They never minded when I would try to cut in and would always give me change to play with- not that I ever got to keep it, I was no match for them! The bond that Fay and my Gramma shared was special and I'm very glad that their friendship led to my family being in her and Kyle's lives. Fay had the most beautiful personality. I can never remember seeing her unhappy. Her smile always lit up the room and until the last time was saw her she was proudly showing us her fashion designs. Rest easy Fay, we miss you down here but I know my Gramma will be so happy to see you up there

“Fay days” at Family reunions were always the best! This picture of Fay (Cher) was taken on the day her brother Harry passed away. I loved hearing her laughter, cheering, and stories. Sending my love to all of you❤️

I am a close friend of Kyla’s  for about the last 30 years and our boys Kyle and Eric grew up together. Faye was such a kind generous person and so full of life and energy.  She had such a positive attitude and sense of humour. She was always cooking and baking and often I got invited for meals and was given yummy baking to take home. You will be missed so much and we will keep the memories of you in our hearts. ❤

What a beautiful tribute to my Auntie Fay. She was such a spark. She loved life and lived it to the fullest. I remember at a Kyle family reunion about 15 years ago or so, Fay forgot to pack her bathing suit so she went to a store in town and purchased one. She was very excited to tell all of us about her purchase. She then proceeded to put it on, stand on the picnic table, and model it for us.  We will all miss her, - my mom, Anne, especially.
