Karen Besser
KAREN ROSE BESSER
May 18, 1958 – November 16, 2023
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Karen Besser on November 16th, 2023 at the age of 65.
Left to cherish her memory are her children; Cameron (Julie), Chad (Dana), Candice and her grandchildren; Cole, Dylan, Landon, Jaxon, and Hailey, her sisters Shirley, Barb (Stephen), Pat (Wendy) and Heather (Chewy) along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was pre-deceased by her husband Richard as well as siblings; Jane-Anne, Majorie, Oliver, and Colleen.
Karen was born in Teulon,, Manitoba on May 18, 1958, where she attended school until she was 13 years old, after which she moved to Winnipeg and lived with her sister Marge.
When Karen was 21, she met the love of her life Rick Besser on a blind date at a baseball game. They spent 38 years of marriage together, they enjoyed travelling – especially the trips to Texas with the Besser family, spending weekends in Traverse Bay; mushroom picking, berry picking and fishing.
Karen loved making her famous cabbage rolls for family gatherings, if you were fortunate enough to receive a pan of them as a gift, you knew you were on her good list. When she was not cooking up a feast in the kitchen; you could find her sitting on the deck with a glass of wine in hand – rolling a Yahtzee or playing a game of crib.
Karen enjoyed her position at Fort Garry Industries where she worked for over 10 years, until she had to begin her cancer treatments. She appreciated the love and support that she received from her co-workers.
Karen’s children and her grandchildren were her pride and joy. She was their biggest cheerleader from attending sporting events, to graduations, to school concerts, you would always find her there with the biggest smile on her face.
No one needed a social media notification or weather app, if you talked to Karen daily, she would let you know the week’s forecast, all the upcoming family and friend’s birthday’s and anniversaries.
The family offers thanks to all the doctors, nurses and medical support who took care of Karen throughout the years. This includes Dr. Breckman, Dr. McCarthy, Dr. Dawe, Tom (pharmacist) and the nurses and aides at Cancer Care.
We would also like to extend our thanks to the doctors and staff at Riverview Health Care Centre for their care and support.
Special thanks to her sister Pat for being Karen’s chauffeur to her medical appointments over the years.
Details on a celebration of life will be available at a later date.
“A wife, a mother, a nana too,
This is the legacy we have from you.
You taught us love and how to fight,
You gave us strength; you gave us might.
A stronger person would be hard to find,
And in your heart, you were always kind.
You fought for us all in one way or another,
Not just as a wife not just as a mother,
For all of us you gave your best,
Now the time has come for you to rest.
So, go now in peace, you’ve earned your sleep
Your love in our hearts, we’ll enterally keep.”
