Herb Bessler

HERBERT FREDERICK GEORGE BESSLER
February 16, 1936 - April 6, 2026
Herb Bessler passed away at the age of 90 on Easter Monday morning, April 6, 2026 at Grace Hospital following a short period of decline.
Herb was predeceased by his father Fred, mother Minnie; and sisters, Eleanor, Alma and Gertrude. Left to remember him are his wife of 67 years Ena; daughter Patricia (Peter), son Craig (Patricia Louise); granddaughter Elisabeth (John Paul); great grandson Alexander, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, in-laws and friends.
Herb grew up an inquisitive, adventurous and occasionally mischievous child. His life-long love of cycling started as a tyke when he slipped away and rode his tricycle almost 3 km from Lansdowne Avenue to the foot of the Arlington Bridge. At the conclusion of the search by police and the older children of Faraday School, Herbie simply stated that he wanted to see the choo choos in the rail yard.
Trains continued to pull at Herb, resulting in an early departure from St. John’s Technical High School and an apprenticeship with CNR at the Transcona Shops. Herb and Ena married in 1958, purchased a house and beautifully landscaped their yard. Just prior to becoming a father, Herb switched to the Canada Post Office after an unnerving riveting accident. He carried the mail for nearly 30 years, delighting in the many dog friends on his routes and taking an early retirement in 1991. In his spare time Herb was always putting his skills to work, building the upper level rooms for his young family in their first home and the basement rooms in their second. He built many pieces of furniture that grace our homes to this day. Ena, Patricia and Craig spent many school summer holidays at the Grand Beach cottage that he would work on during weekends. A thoughtful planner, Herb took his time with each project to ensure that it was done right.
Saving their real vacations for retirement and following a few trips to Hawaii, Herb and Ena enjoyed more than 25 winters in Arizona. He was a dedicated Jets and Blue Bombers fan, always happy to discuss past and future games.
Helpfulness and concern for others was important to Herb. To his last days he continued to offer assistance to friends, relatives and neighbours.
Herb believed in charitable donation, supporting many worthwhile causes. If so inclined please offer your support to Canadian Lutheran World Relief, The War Amps or the charity of your choice.
In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place and no service will be held.
