David Birt

DAVID DANIEL BIRT
June 23, 1955 - July 4, 2026
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of David Birt at 71 years old.
Dave passed away with his family by his side in St. Boniface Hospital after a brief battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Cindy; daughters Kaleigh (Colin) and Lauren (Kyle); grandchildren Logan and Maisie; sisters Louise and Billie; as well as his nieces and nephews.
Dave grew up in St. James and moved to Charleswood where he spent the rest of his days. He spent the majority of his life working in the construction industry starting his career at GD Johnson and eventually retiring from National Concrete. Sales was the perfect career for Dave, he was even fortunate enough to build friendships that lasted over 30 years. He retired a few years ago and spent the majority of his time watching his grandchildren.
Dave loved to travel; Mexico, Hawaii, road trips to the US, always making new friends along the way. He spent his summers travelling to West Hawk Lake, and many other lakes to spend time with family and friends.
Sports were a huge part of Dave’s life. He was a proud member of St. James Rugby, played hockey, enjoyed running marathons and playing a round of golf. When he was not playing sports, he was watching them. A famous band wagoner and the Jets best worst fan. He also spent a lot of time in the stands at the rink and ball diamond watching his girls play.
He was loved by many (Best Man, 9 times). He was the life of every party and couldn’t go anywhere without seeing someone he knew. Even if it started off where he didn’t actually know anyone, by the time he left, he had made a new friend.
A man of many names; David, Dave, Davey Boy, Birty, Lumpy, Stinky, UD, Dad, Daddio, Papa, Pa and Pampa, to name a few.
You will be missed
beyond measure
and this world has lost
a personality of the ages.
We love you forever.
In lieu of flowers; donations may be made to the St. James Legion (Royal Canadian Legion #4).

I arrived as a grade 9 newbie at SJCI. Dave and his rugby posse "monitored" class change in the hall by the corner of the gym. It was a tad intimidating but his playful comments were always kind.
Dave was always so caring. Cindy reminded me that she and Dave spent their honeymoon with me at UND. I was feeling homesick and was delighted by their company!
One of the things I loved about Dave was his direct NO BS approach. He was sincere and gave you his full attention.
The man was a legend, a big gregarious guy with an even bigger heart!
Absolutely heartbreaking to lose Dave so soon.💔 Our deepest condolences to Cindy, Kaleigh, Lauren, Logan, Maisie and our Birt Girl cousins Billie and Louise.
Love you Dave and will sure miss you.❤️

First time being invited to the platsko trailer many moons ago and minutes after we arrived UD appears. Tracey says... " this is uncle Dave. Just call him UD. And that was that. It was like I'd known him all my life. He was joyful to be around. A good soul. It's been years since we've seen you all but we think about the old westhawk days often. Our and prayers go out to all of you. May his memories keep him alive in your heart. Rest in Peace UD

Dave was a happy guy and a good neighbour !
When something tickled his fancy, he would laugh.
On a clear night the whole neighbourhood could hear that laugh.
Dave had a great sense of humour, as anyone who knew him knows. He always made you feel welcomed and at home & he welcomed everyone. He celebrated in everyone's joys and supported in tougher times.
He indeed was a great neighbour & great neighbours are hard to find, difficult to part with, and impossible to forget. They also make a difference in the quality of life for everyone around them.
Happy to say Dave was our friend and neighbour !
And he will certainly be missed.

Growimng up with the Birt's was beautful. So many laughs, so many great times, and so much love. From countless holiday parties, dinners and endless nights dancing to Beds are Burning around the camp fires at West Hawk... the echo of Dave's voice shouting my name followed by hi girls!! Huge hugs and always a drink waiting when I was old enough. Ha! Thank you for all of it... Since before *I* was born." Xo

I am so sorry to hear of this and please accept my sincerest condolences. My thoughts are with all of the family. Dave was a customer, but more importantly a friend. I will always remember being invited over to his house for a family dinner and being part of the family photo. That means so much to me. Dave will be missed by so many, but the memories will certainly put a smile on everyone's face.

My deepest condolences to Dave's whole family. I first met Dave when he worked and GD Johnson, then through the years at NCA till they closed. We supplies him with construction tubes, just a wonderful character that I had the privilage to deal with daily. If everyone could only be like Dave. I'm grateful to have met such a wonderful person that litterally made you laugh with every call. May you RIP Dave.

i grew up with Davey & his sisters on Parkview St. We had great times playing hide and seek with all the neighborhood kids.
i am so glad I talked to Dave just a week before he passed. He told me he "had a good run" with a great family and lifelong friends like me". It was always fun reminiscing when we did see each other. Tell my brother Ken I miss him & make sure you get in some rounds of golf wth him and a couple of whiskeys after.
Davey, you will be dearly missed by everyone.
RIP
Barb & Ian

Dave is my brother-in-law and I first met him when he was 9 and even then he had more friends than most people accumulate in a lifetime and a sense of humor that is unmatched.
He was an avid hockey and rugby player and I always enjoyed watching his games. And of course there were always the horseshoe tournaments at West Hawk lake.
Our family was transferred out of the province a couple of times and Dave and Cindy were always there to visit, see the sites, and share good times.
Dave was more like a friend to me than in-law.
I will miss you Birty.
