ALICE BRENDT

(née Dzuba)

April 21, 1933 – November 9, 2025

It is with our deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of Alice Brendt on November 9, 2025 at the Riverview Health Centre. She was 92.

She was predeceased by her husband Arthur; her parents, Andrew and Franca Dzuba; and her siblings and their spouses: Elizabeth (Metro Helash), John (Joan Citroen), Margaret (Anton Synkiw), William Dzuba, Matt Dzuba, Peter Dzuba, Marie (Hans Fries), Anne (Peter Dmytrow), Eileen (Nick Hryhoriw), Alec (Sofie Evashchenko), Mike Dzuba, and Kay Koivula.

Left to cherish her memory are her three daughters, Mary, Tanise Sudoski, Debbie (Barry LeClaire); and nephew Bradley Fries (Tannis); six grandchildren, Wayne and Christal Sudoski, Wendy (Lyle Laurila), Brandi (James Spiers), Ulana (Sam Tunbridge), Cale Fries (Tessa Sharpe); and two great-grandchildren, Hunter and Colton Laurila.

Alice was born on April 21, 1933 and grew up on the farm in Toutes Aides, Manitoba. She was number eleven of thirteen children in the family. By the time she was born, most of her siblings had already left home to work elsewhere.

Education was not a priority in the 1940’s as children were usually needed to help on the farm: tending the animals, seeding the fields, planting the gardens, making hay, milking cows, picking mushrooms and wild berries, and harvesting the grain in the fall.

Alice was usually in the house helping her mother with the cleaning, washing dishes, gardening, cooking meals and making bread. At the age of twelve, Alice lost her mother and took over the running of the household and tending to her two younger siblings. Of course, this was done without running water or electricity.

At the age of seventeen, Alice moved to Winnipeg and worked in the restaurant industry washing dishes and later as a short order cook and finally as a waitress.

It was during this time she met Art. They dated for about a year before getting married on December 18, 1953. Over the next few years, after moving several times, the family returned to Winnipeg because Art had fallen ill. Art passed away on January 23, 1966 at the age of 37.

Being widowed at the age of 32 and left on her own to raise three children, Alice chose to stay home and raise her children. She did some sewing, sold cabbage rolls and perogies to make some extra money. Then in 1967, Brad joined our family. There were now four children. Two things were important to Alice: putting a roof over our head and having good food on our table.

Alice did some part time work once the children were older and were able to fend for themselves. She eventually returned to full time work as a Nutritional Technician at the Municipal Hospital kitchens for eighteen years and finally retired in 1993.

She loved to travel. She travelled across Canada, in the US, and went on a European tour in 1981. In 1983, she went to Ukraine to visit her father’s family.

Alice had a wide range of hobbies but her main love was sewing and crochet. She sewed all sorts of garments from dresses, suits, wedding and bridesmaid dresses, drapery, cuddly teddy bears, patchwork quilts, doll clothes and altered and repaired clothing. She completed many crocheted lace tablecloths, afghans, knitted mitts, hats, and scarves. She also delved into leather work which included mukluks, moose hide moccasins, and gauntlets. She also created needlework crafts such as needlepoint, petit point and Ukrainian embroidery.

Alice enjoyed her retirement years until her health started to decline over the last couple of years.

We would like to thank the staff at the St. Boniface Hospital, Seven Oaks Hospital, and the Riverview Health Centre for the wonderful care they provided for our mother.

Alice was cremated and will rest with her husband in the Field of Honour section of Brookside Cemetery.

A Celebration of Alice’s Life will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Friday, December 5, 2025 at the Unitarian Universalist Church located at 603 Wellington Crescent.
